It's Red Jim, but not as we know it !!

Post by thx1955 »

So,
I happened to get given as an early Birthday present, I'm almost speechless, as this was a totally unexpected surprise !!

August 1991 4003-S in almost mint condition, solid Red, with a Rosewood fretboard, and, yes, this is the one that was on the Seattle Craiglist !!!

I had a chance to play it today and the neck and tone is wonderful, it's not Fireglo, but she is so very lovely, and is, other than my 75th, my first ever non-Fireglo Ric in my 35 years of owning RIcs !!!

My question to my fellow Forumites, how rare was this all Red finish with all black hardware on a 4003-S model, and also current thoughts on value for insurance, feel free to send that information via PM if you'd prefer.

Nice catch! I have one just like it but it is an '85. Red is a great color (IMHO). It seems the prices have been climbing lately. BT is gaining in popularity. I don't think Red was a terribly popular color but good examples of it are out there.

Red with black trim is always a nice color combination.

HI there Ted, nice to see you, how are things with you !

She is nice, a bit strange for me not to be able to see grain, but as I said she plays wonderfully

Kinda nice to have something different ehhh? She's a beaut!

Insurance value I'd put at $1.8-2K.

Mine was a BIN bargain $750 about 3 years ago. What makes that price even sweeter is it is one of the best Ricks I have ever handled. Great action, stable neck, great voice, no serious dead spots.

Ted, yours is a standard 4003, while Jim's is an S model. Pretty unusual. Ted also has the reddist of Reds -- the Redneck, and a fine one, too!

Jim, very nice bass. There was a late 80s or early 90s one with BT here back in 2004-05 at our GC. It had a Bart pup in the bridge, and needed a setup really bad, but I now wish I'd made an offer to them since it had sat for so long - they were asking $950 at the time and that was the high side of average then. Congrats and Happy Birthday (when it comes).
