What's up in Cleveland?

Cleveland's population has been falling at a dramatic rate. The city has lost 8% of its population—about 40,000 people, since 2000. Like many rust-belt cities, Cleveland is feeling the impact of a weak manufacturing industry. The top negative attributes, according to the survey, were environment—climate, park space, natural resources (58%); health and safety (45%); and image (42%).

Park space, is this referring to parking space or park, as in natural spaces with trees, rivers, etc.? If the latter, we have some superb parks, really.

Well, no offense to any Clevelanders, but I visited the city this summer and thought it was a dirty craphole. The only place worse in my opinion is Detroit. The baseball stadium was cool though and I had an awesome sandwich with fries & coleslaw on the bun.

It depends on where you go in Cleveland. You could find the same in many a city.

I dig it up there, you can do a whole bunch of stuff all around within a 2 hour radius.

I'm afraid that the old image of Cleveland's Cuyahoga river on fire is still burning in people's mind. Or maybe it's just that joke of a Rock n Roll musuem that has driven folks off; nice building but completely devoid of any curatorship.

Believe it or not, NAMM held one of their summer conventions there in the late 1960's. This was great for me as my girlfriend lived there and gave me a chance to spend more time in her hometown.

They love their prog rock up there too. The first time I saw The Musical Box, I flew to Cleveland just for the night to see their "Lamb" show. I walked over to the R&R HOF too, it was alright I guess. Now I can say I've done it.

I think Jeff's right, you can find whatever you want in just about any big city. Seems like Cleveland definitely gets a bad rap, though.

I work in Cleveland and live in a suburb. Like many older cities "Cleveland" describes the downtown and surrounding "inner city" areas. There are 40+ suburbs comprising the Cleveland metro area where the majority of folks in the Cleveland area live. These 'burbs range from kind of OK to pretty nice.

Those in the area know that the space within the city limits has been undergoing a slow transformation. The Cleveland Clinic, the area's largest private employer, is buying up large tracts of land, razing houses and expanding in the inner city/east side. Thus, I am not surprised by the statistics showing population declines within the city limits.

The Cleveland area is in the rust belt, and has been hard hit due to the loss of manufacturing jobs; however, there is a lot more to the "mistake on the lake" than the statistics and the "rust belt" designation suggest. I am not a Cleveland or Ohio native, but I have found it a great place to live and work. To echo some other comments, there's a lot of good music here, there's some great sports and cultural facilities (and even a good NBA team) and it's easy to get around.

For nature lovers, the greater Cleveland area offers some excellent parks, rivers, walking and bicycling trails, a national park, bald eagles , not to mention the lake for boating. For music, we have a fantastic summer music facility at Blossom Music Center, and Severance Hall, which is one of the finest concert halls in the world along with The Cleveland Orchestra, most definitely one of the worlds finest.

Maybe it's the association with the Cleveland Steamer that is turning people off.
