James Jamerson was numero uno. Behind him are Duck Dunn, Bob Babbitt, Carol Kaye, John Entwistle, John Wetton, Jack Bruce and Jack Casady. There are many others. Too many to name.

Having recently reacquainted myself with the Moody Blues, I'd have to nominate John Lodge as being up there with the best.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

I agree with most or all of the above, I'll add a couple of my personal favorites:
McCartney, of course (just about wrote the pop electric bass book)
Ron Wood, (best hard rock bass sound I've ever heard on Beckola.)
Tim Bogart (madman and great)
Chas Chandler (great, great sound and lines)
Willy Dixon
Wyman (his bass sounded like a bass)
JPJ was phenomenal
Verdine White, Earth Wind and Fire
any bass player that played with James Brown.
99% of my favorite bass players were from the 60's.
I could go on and on though.

Another one I haven't seen anyone mention is Burke Shelley, the bassist from Budgie.
