I taught EFL(english as a foreign language) in Kyoto and Osaka in the 80's and 90's.

Well,the school I used to work at allowed entering by the fuddle.That is how I got the job.

I teach English I and III in a small parochial high school in Kentucky. I see all 70 of the freshmen during the day and 15 of the juniors. Besides teaching English, I'm certified for social studies. I really enjoy my job and the creativity that I'm afforded here. The kids, for the most part, are great. I also coach the speech team, so I get to travel with about 20 of them fairly regularly. It's pretty much the best situation that I could have hoped for in my first year of full-time teaching.

Probably one of the best parts of the job is to expose the students to the great music of the past, with which many are sadly unfamiliar. They also get a kick out of seeing the different instruments that I've brought in to blow off steam during the day when I have a free period. The looks on the parents' faces when they met me and saw a mid-20's teacher with posters on the walls of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Who and Elvis Presley were priceless.

I don't do much teaching these days other than helping the occasional high school student with math or science stuff. When I was in grad school, I was a TA for various Electrical Engineering classes. I've also, in the past taught numerous classes in the 'C' programming language, at the university and at the company I work for.

Although the management is largely the same as it was in "your day", Kira, the last five years has seen the place grow by leaps and bounds and become world-class in terms of the talent that we develop and turn loose on an unsuspecting world...

I cannot complain, nor would I make a serious negative comment. It is a real world situation that pays me very well, and allows me the freedom to run my area of the department in such a way as to allow for maximum bang for the students' tuition dollars, while still meeting the standards and practices of the five outfits that give us accreditation.

I spent most of my career self-employed, Occasionally an interesting opportunity would offer itself (usually with a start-up) and I became adept at taking design and Product Development departments from one person (me) to dozens, while still making the company money. The downside to startups was that I would invariably report directly to the CEO, who within a few months would want to compete and end up standing in my way, mucking things up for his own company!

But, here, with virtually a start-up department (one that was in very bad shape, actually, though very young), I was given free reign and a nice annual budget. The results speak for themselves...a house-cleaning, followed by a three-year reconstruction and restaffing program, yielded very good results. So you won't hear me being nasty about the school, although San Franciscans seem to be divided in their opinions.

The School has been addled by opinions formed before its most recent metamorphosis. Those who continue to spout the same old, tired criticisms, are living in the past.

None of this was directed at you personally, Kira, but is more in the spirit of "it's a new day". Come on by sometime--I'll gi' ye a tour.

Not to hijack, but I looked at your bio at the academy, PW. What does the A stand for? PAW does have a certain warmth to it (at least here in Texas ).

Paul, I always found it to be as you say at the Academy. Dynamic instructors such as yourself giving the students a good deal for their money. That hasn't changed since I helped move the Fine Arts department into the Bush Street building and grow into one of the best Sculpture labs in the country.
