SO now, he's asking "how am I going to pay for this trip Dad"........my response? Who are you again?

I'm not sure how he is going to decide what part of Australia to "study abroad" in, or how HE is going to pay for it, but hopefully he hooks up with a broad who will teach him for free!

I'm a little late on this one, but I've never met any Australian who is a descendant of a convict, though I believe it is considered to be the pinnacle of Australian geneology to be linked to one.

Although I haven't looked at the figures, the ratio of free settlers to convicts over the span of modern Australia's 220-year existance is probably more than 10,000:1. That's like trying to find a felonious needle in a law-abiding migrant haystack.

There were a lot more than you imagine. There were 168,000 convicts transported to Australia over a period of eighty years. At the time transportation ceased, the total population was 1.7 million, a ratio of 10:1. Even at 2010 figures, the ratio is still only 150:1 for a population of roughly 25 million.
There's a lot more of us as descendants who would have convict ancestry than some would care to admit.

My great grandfather arrived here as a convict, however, there was little stigma attached to this and was no obstacle to his children. My grandfather became a federal government minister. (It could be said however, there is definitely some stigma attached to that profession)

My great-Grandfather arrived here as a policeman in the Early 1880s. His son, my Grandfather, became a Lawyer in a country mining town from the early 1930's up until his passing in 1963. His law firm still exists today and is a tremendous source of interest to my children whenever we pass through the town. His son, my Father, also became a Lawyer, and, until his passing in 1995, was senior partner in a very successful Melbourne law firm.
His son, ME , didn't become a Lawyer.
.....but they never played a Rick!!!
