Rickenbacker History

Post by upstairsdave »

I have the 1991 4001V63. What was the original pickup vs the reissues. I have seen some 4001V63's without the toaster pick-up. Mine has a split cover for the bridge pick-up and the toaster pick-up for the neck pick-up. I've seen some V63's with the split cover and some without the split cover. Is there any books or web sites devoted to the history through the years to present on the Rickenbacker instrument company?

as far as I know EVERY 4001v63 has a neck toaster and a bridge re-issue horseshoe pickup ... the toaster is pretty much the same as the 60's toaster ... the re-issue horseshoe is a lot more modern sounding ... it has more windings and no capaciter and a more powerful magnet ...

and in my opinion an excellent sounding bass

As far as history, check out rickbeat.com, and go to "models" on the left hand menu, there you can see all of the models Rick has ever made.

I see some mistakes in the 4000 History as it pertains to the 4005 series.

"1974 - Gap in center raised lip of bridge eliminated"

It never had a bridge with and raised lips. The bridge is the same as the guitars such as the 360.

"Available only in Fireglo and Mapleglo finishes"

My '67 4005WB is in Jetglo.

Great bass Jeffrey.

We don't see many of them on this side of the pond!

Let alone in these parts!
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Let's see... hmmm... no, not many of those around here too.

Jeffrey, I wonder if yours is a one-off with the double binding, and if not, how many 4005BW were made?

I have seen only one other, in thirty years of looking, on a Japanese site. You can find it here:

www.ricmania.jp/ric.html

Look under Uchida's collection.

Jeffrey, I just found a 4005/8WB Mapleglo in rickbeat.com. It has the "wavy" headstock:

Still these WB models seem as scarce as hen's teeth.

Part of what makes mine and Uchida's rare I think is the Jetglo finish.
