Pete was last SEEN playing a Rickenbacker in 1981, I think, the "Don't Let Go The Coat" video

Now, from what I've read, Pete played Rics on the Who's 1989 US and UK tours, but I cannot seem to find any video footage from that.

He still uses Rics frequently in the studio, but they've never made a stage return...mostly because he doesn't WANT to smash them.

That should be pretty easy: just don't smash them. He hasn't been smashing much anyway at the average concert anyway, although I did see him throw a Strat down when I saw them as he stormed off the stage to get something taken care of that he didn't like...Roger looked shocked and was left to take care of "The Kids are Alright" on his own for a bit. When I listen to the CD of the show, it's still crazy.

The last time I saw Geddy Lee play his Ric bass was a year and a half ago on the Snakes and Arrows tour, when he brought his old 4001 out for Passage to Bangkok. Not my favorite Rush song by a long shot, but it was sure awesome to see him use the Ric live! I think the last time he regularly played his Ric was during the Moving Pictures era, which was in the early 80's. I hope he starts using his Ric more often, now that he's gotten reacquainted with it!

Geddy made a very interesting comment regarding using his Rick again, in the current issue of the UK Bass Guitar Magazine.

Geddy's bass tech made very interesting comments regarding Geddy using his Rick again, over in his TalkBass thread. The tech loved it because it stayed in tune and the neck stayed put. Unlike the Jazz basses....

Here is the comment from the interview conducted by Joel McIver:

Q: Will you ever play a Rickenbacker bass again?

A: "Actually, I played a Ricky in the encores on the DVD, primarily because I'm sick of people asking me when I'm going to play a Rickenbacker again! I love their tone - it's right for some of our songs. I really enjoy playing the Rickys, I just needed a different tone back in the '80s for the music we were doing then, which is why I switched to the Jazz.

I saw the Who back in 89, Pete didn't play the electric at all at the Meadowlands in NJ. He had some else play those parts. He played acoustic all night I think he was having trouble with his hearing (tinnitus) ringing in the ear, which caused him alot of pain if he stood close to an amp. He said it was caused by too much drinking and playing loud guitar all night.

My guess on McCartney is through the late 80's in performances, but that is only a guess.

Another name I'd add would be Mike Mills with REM. He was a big influence on me getting my first Ric when I was much younger. I probably went with Jetglo for my 4001S due to Mills. I'd like to know when he stopped and went to the dark side. His sound certainly became less interesting.

I think this is one of the last times Bruce Foxton was publicly seen playing a Ric bass. Early 1982.
