My fair city has effectively decriminalized small amounts for personal consumption, and I couldn't be more proud and relieved. The local police were all in favor of it, too, including a retired lieutenant who made phone calls to everyone in town supporting the referendum before the election.

Who would you rather have attacking your town: NORML, or organized crime and a trigger-happy DEA? If I'm not mistaken, John, Western Michigan University has got to be one of the biggest sources of income for Kalamazoo...would you like to see a massive police sweep through all those dorms and a subsequent closing down of the campus? Not good for the Chamber of Commerce...

A little easing of restrictions on pot might be a step towards defeating that nagging meth problem you guys have...

All wrong. KVET stays really really busy finding all the meth labs in SW MI, and does a credible job with the rest of the illicit drugs. That's all we need around here - a lot more people on drugs... I know all the arguments, so don't try to convince me differently. What really frosts my cake is they are coming here from out of state!!!!

The local authorities pretty much ignore personal use and licensed growing in the North Bay Area, as long as one doesn't try to make the cops look silly. They leave it alone and concentrate on the important things - like nuisance tickets, for example. The city coffers need an extra quota of justice in these hard economic times, so there are more black & white tricycles and fewer white vans on the road lately .

Yeah, and the AP just ran stories about how growing and illegal trade of it has gotten totally out of hand. Been searching but can't find the story - it ran either Tuesay, yesterday, or today.

Well, John, that certainly leaves little room for discussion. Fine, then. It's just a little difficult not to respond to the hyperbole contained in the image of NORML 'attacking' anyone...have you ever met any of those guys? They're a pretty friendly, harmless bunch.

I visited Kalamazoo frequently during the '60's. My mom grew up there, and my grandmother's house was at 2711 E. Main...it's since been demolished for the expansion of the fire house next door. I have fond memories of the place and all the aunts, uncles and cousins. My wonderful cousin Mike, who's a few years older than me, was drafted and sent to Nam...he returned after his hitch to find that he didn't fit into K'zoo anymore (what with all the prevailing 'Dutch Reformed'-style provincialism, uninformed rah-rah patriotism, etc.) If you care to, you can read his story, along with those of others, in "Charlie Company - What Vietnam Did To Us" by Peter Goldman and Tony Fuller (William Morrow and Co., 1983), or see an interview with him in the follow-up film of the same name made by Bill Moyers.

I won't recount much of it here, except to say that he sold all the pot he brought back from Nam, moved to Montana and built a cabin up on a mountainside. (Sounds like a Zappa song...)

Just think, some of the pot you and your buddies bought back in the day might have come from him...
