IT AIN'T EASY BEING GREEN...

Post by jingle_jangle »

A few of you saw this one at NAMM...

Many RRFers are under the impression that I don't like green guitars...but it's only because I was bitten as a teen by a Burns with a black-to-green burst finish. Some may recall the Apple Green burst 730 I tried in mid-2006. I'm still trying to get the taste of sour apples out of my mouth. It was stripped down and repainted AFG to fill bandmate George's order.

I have a couple of green acoustics on order. This one was one of my trial balloons that ended up turning out well. I literally dreamed this color, the night before It was due to be sprayed. An all-greenburst was too predictable. But a deep Spruce Green burst back and sides with a transparent white-washed spruce top (a lá Mary Kay Strat color), and gold trim and hardware?

The whitened spruce top is just dark enough to appear to be a whole raft of different shades depending upon the light, from pale tan through warm to cool gray, and even taupe under cool indoor lighting. Any way, it contrasts nicely with the white binding and checkerboard purfling, and sets the green off nicely.

This color does not photograph easily, even with a 4-element digital CCD. But these pictures, slightly tweaked, come pretty close.

This one goes out to Mike Parks in the next couple days.

Beautiful work, Paul. I'm sure Mike will be thrilled. What a unique guitar!

BTW, who'se that guy in your new avatar? He looks like a really creative artsy type I knew in Chicago in the 70's . . .

Hey, sorta reminds me of a Gretsch Anniversary model. Cool!

I'm a huge fan of the Gretsch Anniversary model- some of it for reasons I cannot understand- but this is a much nicer piece in every way. This is fantastic and deserves to stand proudly next to everything else you have done.

I think green is about the hardest finish to get a color balance right on. It looks like you used a dash of extra blue in to assure yourself avoidoidance of "avocodoification", or much worse: "overcooked pea syndrome".

Yup!! A beaut, Paul....... the green doesn't smack you in the face - very nice use of it with the contrasting top. :D

That's gorgeous. I could most certainly be persuaded to buy that guitar if I had set aside the cash for a new instrument. Another great job Paul.

Wow.... that's truly breathtaking, Paul! I love the shade of green--in the pictures it really looks very close to Aquaburst. Stunning work as always, and I love the contrast between the light top and the dark sides.

Me likey, way much! I wish it were mine!

I should have titled this, "It ain't easy photographing green"...

The actual color has absolutely no resemblance to Aquaglo. It is deep spruce green (only way I can describe it), shaded in a deeper tint of the same color. But the darned camera keeps wanting to show it more blue than it actually is. I think the color you can see in the toppermost (on the sofa) shot is probably the closest to the real color.

WOW! I'm not generally a fan of green on guitars, but... WOW!
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Absolutely stunning, Paul. A beautiful job on an equally beautiful instrument.

Sensational!! Maybe this has been addressed elsewhere on the forum (I couldn't find it), but what is the width at the nut on these acoustics? Slender profile, or...?

Very nice....I'm curious if there is any significant difference between the way you apply the "wash" on the top and the way you finish the rest of the guitar.
