The colors in the control cavity were connected correctly according to the diagram (red to the switch and blue to the ground). I called customer service today and I can start the return proceedings once they receive my warranty card. I got the impression that it wouldn't be a big deal at all to return it for repair. That's good.

After looking at the diagram, I'm trying to figure out what it means to be reversed polarity and, more importantly, what the diagram really means. The way I'm reading it, there are two coils in the humbucker (which makes sense), but it looks like only one provides output, the inside of the top coil (the red wire). If the leads are swapped, then I'm getting one inside from the top coil and one inside from the bottom (essentially one red and one blue)?

I did get to play it last night at our church band practice and the bass is awesome. I think I will primarily use the treble pickup on this one because the pickup still puts out a good bit of bass. The body contours make it the most comfortable I've ever played and the relatively light weight is certainly a bonus. After playing it for a couple of hours for just one night, I have no idea why this series isn't more popular.
1) You'd have to check both pickups.
2) The two windings are in series - i.e. the coil flow is red inside to black outside to clear outside to blue inside. Thus they are in series but reversed to cancel hum (outside to inside). You are looking to make sure BOTH pickups have the 4 wires to the coil circuit board connections with the same wire in the same holes, then also the black and clear together at the other end of the coax with the same color to ground and the same color to the switch. If they are different at the circuit board or the red and blue reversed on one pup, you would be out of phase.
3) That is the reaction of any Rick owner who tries a 4004 onstage.

After playing it for a couple of WEEKS I have no idea why this series isn't more popular.

Here edited it...

I hear a lot of "talkbass" about "my new____________" Sure.
Great instruments out there, and a 4003 always gets the party started.

Where is the 4004 Love? Pretty much the perfect bass, from what I know, I mean what the heck else do you need??

It has feel, balance, precision, and a basic sonic simplicity if you will that takes it DOWN.

My bare-bones plain-jane Laredo would not win the Beauty pageant against a Cheyenne; seeing them ALL at NAMM was kinda like a dream sequence, them hanging there, together....Can you imagine??
ANd that's where I first noticed/saw the ....sandwich! Gawd, is that a beautiful piece of wood!

Bejeweled or not, mine plays like the bad-azz mutha bass guitar it is- and oops, I apologize I see you use yours in a Church setting, so my BAd!

I not only do the regular ole' Bar Scene, but play continously with my PROJECT in....Las Vegas, where people seem to forget about the Good Book for a monent or two!

ANyways, haven't brought the Laredo there as of yet, but I hope your polarity issues are taken care of....
ANd it's fine with me...let the masses flock to builders other than Rickenbacker for a 4004 series.
I hear the wait is pretty long for some!

This is just me, but for some reason, if I were ever to get a 4004, it'd definitely have to be a Cheyenne. I don't even know why exactly. I guess I just like the idea of a big bump in the low end from that walnut. Although, lots of people with 4004Ls report a lot of thump too. It may have to do with the pickups? Or the different construction...?

Interested to hear sound clips!

Dang it Tony, I noticed the last post on this thread was by you and I opened it expecting some good news!

Speaking of BBR finishes, who was it that had the BBR Rick with the finish issue and devoted a whole thread to it before contacting RIC CS, but then neglected to update us with the news that it had been taken care of by RIC?
