FG over AFG - always, no question for me.

This is my 620 FG:

My goodness this so makes me yearn for a 4003...
This finish and wood grain is absolutely stunning! I hope my 4003 (on order since '06) looks as good!

Peace.

My two cents: I like the older version of the regular fireglo. I don't like the black at all, and would much rather have the red. However, the old AFG without the black was also pretty. That is not to say I want the huge transition from the red to the center, but I think the Carl Wilson Fireglos were amazing... which is why I bought one!

Color, like tone, is subjective. As soon as I saw the versus in the title, I knew this was going to be a big opinion-fest!

The added benefit is people showing examples of instruments with their preferred finish!

I'd say the question is a winner, though not "Quick"! ;)

Peace.

I love the fireglo on my 1997 reissue. The amber fireglo is nice, but I think fireglo is best when ambered on it's own.

I actually really prefer my AFGs, but I wouldn't care if they were FG or MG either. I didn't buy them based on finish--didn't have a choice either time.

For my fretless I actually think the overall yellow binding, yellow dot inlays, AFG finish look is really key to the aesthetic. For my fretted bass it's not as important but still cool.

I liked the later version AFG, especially on the full width inlays. It gave them more of a subtle champagne colour like the vintage sparkly inlays. Still not so sure about the yellow binding through. So I'll vote for the new FG - some superb examples have been presented here...that 4003, wow. Rickenbacker are getting better and better.

This thread has some of the nicest FG/AFG finishes on the planet. Unfortunately, for every one that has such a nice blending of colors, I find five that look like this.
Looks kind of cheap to me

No disrespect to FG lovers, but here is another. It's because of the inconsistant FG finishes that I chose basic black. Fireglo is probably Ric's best color. Just as long as it isn't one of these amateur looking finishes. Just my opinion.
