This guy must have been the inspiration...another bolt on head.
FRANKENBACKER!!!!
FRANKENBACKER!!!!
Re: Bolt on headstock!!!???
This was from May 1966, right before The Who recorded "Disguises" and "I'm a Boy"
Here is another photo from that same night:

Pete's guitar is a Rose Morris 1993/12 12-string...a guitar I'd do anything legal to play, let alone own.

I'll venture to guess that Pete DIDN'T use the Frankenbacker on those recordings!

Hey, maybe it wasn't damaged at all! Maybe Pete was the true first inventor of those pieces of metal players mounted to their headstocks to increase sustain!!!..................nah.
Expect nothing and you'll never be disappointed (and I mean that in an optimistic way).

Egads! I've seen these pics before, but never in such detail!
I had a nightmare last night that something similar happened to my Turquoise WB! It was awful; chips and chunks of wood an paint everywhere. Ugh.

Gee, Paul, were you dreaming it was September 1964 at the Marquee Club?
Re: Bolt on headstock!!!???
Yep......I have always been surprised that Pete's hacked repair actually worked! Apparently for a number of shows too.
This is the same 1993/12 used on the Who's final RSG '66 episode.
It's also pictured here in the "Observer" shot:
For those interested:
The 1993/12 at the left of the circled on was thrown onstage at the Richmond Jazz & Blues Festival August '65
The RM 1998 to the upper left of that 1993/12 is Pete's very first Ric (note Toggle switch), pictured int he Maximum R&B poster
The Double bound Ric to the lower left of the Max. R&B 1998 is Pete's first 12 string Ric- 360s/12 (with F-hole)....also used at the Richmond Jazz/Blues festival in '65- the guitar "I Can't Explain" "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere" and many others were recorded on....
As far as the other 1998 (with the back ripped out) on the right...I haven't figured out yet.

I'm wondering how that guitar stayed in tune well enough to play a show with...amazing.
Great info Collin!

Re: Bolt on headstock!!!???
Pete (I think) played the 1993/12 as a 6 string. Perhaps the "repair" blocked the tuners of the octave strings?
This makes me think, if the 1993/12 was used as a 6 string, then the 12-string parts we hear on the "Quick One" album ("So Sad About Us" and the 'We Have a Remedy" section from the title track) and all sessions ("Pictures of Lily") was more than likely played on this '65 or '66 360/12 MG:

Here's a picture from the "Quick One"/"Pictures of Lily" sessions, and what other do we find than this new 360/12:

And since we're on the subject of "A Quick One"...here's a picture from October 2, 1966...see the Rics, plus the 1993 we mentioned!

Re: Bolt on headstock!!!???
Whups.....correction to my earlier post.
The picture on the absolute far left in the "Observer" shot is not Pete's original 360s/12 , but rather another smashed (and headless) 1993/12.
I haven't figured out what show it was broken at yet, but here is the whole guitar (and other Who spoils...including a rare smashed Entwhistle bass, very unusual, and probably has a good story behind it. )
I dig all the other **** in this shot- the ripped-off early Block Marshall logos, Ric parts etc.... very cool.
