Vox, not to be outdone, had the foresight to issue their 12-strings with vibrato units.

I had an EKO acoustic 12 with pickup that played great. But that was about 1968.

Are they still around?

It was about half the cost of a RIC 12 back then.

That's actually one of my favorite features, used to great effect by Will Sergeant of Echo and the Bunnymen in "The Killing Moon". The unit actually works quite nicely. :D

I almost brought the red Vox to the minicon on Saturday, but it would have been the only non-Rick there, and besides, I don't think I could have fit another guitar in my Ford Focus without Graham having to ride on the roof.

If the wallet's full, a Mosrite Ventures with whammy. Like this one (though it needs a spring and a whammy arm):

They play and sound as good as anything around, and the body shape remains unusual in a world where Fender and Gibson are dime-a-dozen.

If I'm economising (but not too much) then this:

These are wonderfully well-made guitars with the real sound of lipstick-tube pickups and masonite!

I think I would just muddle through with a chorus pedal.

Oh, I would love a twelve-string Gretsch. Tried one out at Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island, New York City. Excellent playability and excellent sound. "Ouch" when it comes to the price.

Given that I've played one of them briefly I'd have to go with Paul on his Vox Teardrops.

The only other 12s I've seen floating around these parts regularly are the Stratocaster XII and the Aussie made Matons:

Even though Mary Chapin-Carpenter plays a RIC 620-12, here's her band mate with an afore-mentioned Fender 12.

Hey Howard!
I've got a friend who has one of the original maton fyrebyrd 12 guitars (I think that they made less than 20 of them)
They look a bit odd but the neck is remarkable and the pickups suited the 12 strings perfectly!

One worth considering is the Epiphone G1275 double neck.
I have an early one (with the bolt on necks)
The Epi HB pickups are well below par and need to be put out to pasture. Mine has been fitted with P-90 in HB shape pickups and although it sounds different to my ex 360/12 they have a quality tone of their own and great resonance due to the monster (alder plywood with maple veneer) body and solid neck joints.
They do need carefull setup (the nut fitting on epis is usually poor leading to bad tuning) but once there they are very stable instruments.
The neck shapes are great too.

Aitch, are the Australian "Maton" guitars pronounced "Mayton" or "Matton"? Just curious, because here in So Cal, we have somewhat of a South of the Border influence; the Spanish word for "killer" is spelled the same way, "Maton", save for an accent symbol over the "o", and pronounced "Muh-TONE".
