It's A Mod Mod Mod Mod World!

Post by jps »

This is for Senõr Jaymi! :D

The idea here is the fun a lot of us have in modifying our instruments to suit our desires and/or needs; let's keep this in the sprit it is intended to be in, FUN!

To start this off, on offer is a quick pic of my '08 4003, with (not shown) vintage RI TRC, Pickguardian swirloid vintage style pickguard, scatterwound toaster pickup in the 1/2" position ( as God and F.C. Hall intended :D ), custom built from early '60s parts horseshoe pickup and Pickguardian plexi finger rest.

that's a beauty, jeffrey! so is the hs one of those recently fiercely debated on this forum? and if so,how do ya like it? love that bass, man! mod-wise,i would like to "build" a 50's look 4000 some day, with the original shape pg,perhaps using an abm bridge, but i am going to need a beat up 4001s,or some dot neck variant to start with....

That is a very cool bass; nice work.

What is the dissent concern? Is it modding the instrument itself, or is it an issue with having restoration done 100% accurately using correct parts only?

Wow. Collectors- I admire the discipline and rigid standards- That's the thing with a "Legacy" brand like Rickenbacker.

Yes, it is! The pickup is amazingly full sounding with the .0047 cap bypassed and the tone is dramatically different to that of the RI HS pickup with the cap in line, there is a greater amount of bottom and low mids reduced compared to the RI. Most likely this is due to the different DC resistances of the two pickups, the RI being around 11K and the RR/DF horseshoe being around 8K. I like that the two pickups are much better balanced than the toaster/RI HS combination I have on both my 4001V63 and '73 4001 that I put a RI HS pickup in. I have TI Jazz Flats on the bass at the moment so I can't really comment on how aggressive it would sound with roundwound strings, something for a future time to check out as this bass sounds great with the TI JFs on it.

I love what you've done with that bass, Jeff. Makes me seriously want a new 4003, checkered binding be damned!

That is a point of contention with some folks. But, just look at all the modded "famous musician" instruments out there in the world, not to mention cars, for one other example, of how people like to tinker and "personalize" things.

So far, I haven't noticed any tonal or playability issues with the bass not having CB.

Wonsaponatime there was a plain-Jane 1999 Jetglo 4003 that I loved very much. Then, I discovered this forum and with it, the existence of the lavish crushed pearl inlays and checkered binding. Uh oh. After a spell in the Pacific Northwest for some cosmetic surgery, she was returned to me the first week of December, 2006, and wouldn't you know it - I loved her even more (and still do).

Jeff and John -- Between your two 4003 basses, I couldn't tell them apart from a distance!

It's really quite simple, m'boy - mine has the nicer binding, inlays, and pickguard.

Though unlike Jeff's, mine is having serious neck issues. It's been in its case for a while now while I contemplate what to do with it. :(

John, you really do have to get one of those HS pickups from Russ, it would complete your mostly  well conceived bass.
