Guitar Storage Ideas

Hello Forumites,

I'm having some space issues in reference to my guitars. This is both good and bad:

Good because I love all of my guitars and don't want to sell them off - Bad because I'm running low on places to stash them.

I saw a post a few months ago from someone who had found some type of metal rack that they used to store guitars in their cases and then another row on top. It looked like a good idea but I can't find that original post anymore and I don't remember who posted it (sorry). I liked this idea because it didn't involve much building. I'm not so great with construction.

Anyway, if someone can point me in the right direction, or has some other good ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I believe it was Aitch (ozover50) who made that rack.

In that same thread Paul W (jingle_jangle) showed a huge rack he made from rawer materials pretty cheaply. You might PM him for those pictures and description. It looked simple and strong.

Oh, pick me, pick me! I've got hundreds of acres on which I can store them... Hmm, maybe outdoors isn't the best idea, huh?

Oh, I've got 8 barns too, well, they might get a tad cold in the winter...

I found the thread, you were correct...........now I need to find the chrome modular shelving units.

Home Depot I guess.

Also, thanks for your very generous offers of help..............but the guitars are staying!

Dan, best place to find those in the USA would be your local Container Store. They are nice-looking and would be the ticket if the rack is going into a living area, as opposed to an industrial or garage situation. The price is commensurate with their attractiveness.

My own racks are built from ordinary 2X4s and heavy stranded steel galvanized wire, nailed together and using the wire to diagonally cross-brace one side. They took a dozen 8 foot 2X4s each to build, so they cost only $40.00 each, including the wire and hardware. Each one holds 50 guitars in cases. They're not pretty, but clean, raw, and utilitarian. Also strong.

Dan - if the Container Store which Paul mentions above does not work for you, these metal shelving units can also be found at IKEA, Lowes and Target, in varying price ranges, finishes and levels of sturdiness. I have 2 units from Lowes which fit the bill for me - unless you're stacking lead weights you don't necessarily have to spend mega-bucks on the commercial grade stuff. It's good to have choices!
