Experiment with 4004

Post by dcr »

I'm doing a little experiment with a 4004. I've put together three pairs of clips, & in each pair everything is the same except for just one thing. Which clips do you prefer?

Clip 1 vs. clip 2:

Thanks for posting these, Dan. They all sound great! Nice job in playing and tone. Octopuses Garden, FM and the last one which sounds familiar, but the song title just not coming to me. :?
These sound clips show why I'm a big fan on the 4004 basses. Is this a Cii?
Is was also wondering what strings you have on your 4004 and how you recorded it.
Show pictures of it! We need to put the face with the voice! :D

Which sound do I prefer? Well, quite honestly it would depend on the playing context; the other musicians, instrumental make up of the group, the room, all those sorts of variables. Both sound fine to me.

Hi Dan,

I found it easy, clips 1, 4 & 5 were my choices.

I'm thinking that maybe Dan was wondering about what genres of music his 4004 would sound best in.

Good question--here's to full disclosure. Some of the clips feature the 4004. Some do not. Everything else is identical. I'm trying to sort out my own preferences--which may of course be relative to genre/style (there need not be any "one best")--but I'd also like to see what some unbiased people think.

Good calls! Last one is "Bones" by Radiohead (from The Bends).
Is this a Cii?
Nope.

D'Addario Pro Steels 165s for this. Recording was dead simple: 12' Monster cable into Yamaha NE-1 for modest EQ then straight into a Fostex MR8 digital recorder, with just a dash of delay.

It's a beauty! I'll try later.

Well, someone said that preferences might depend on the mix, so here are the same 6 clips in a mix:

Clip 1 -- mix
Clip 2 -- mix
Clip 3 -- mix
Clip 4 -- mix
Clip 5 -- mix
Clip 6 -- mix
