Feeling like a poser and not sure what to do

Post by lyric_girl »

Ok folks, I haven't been here much lately and I'm looking for advice. I'm the one that has the REM ink on my arm that features Peter Buck's 360 prominently in the middle. I have felt that in order not to be such a poser that I needed a Ric, and my stupid husband planted that idea in my head. You would think he would have learned by now (25 years, but no)! So, I ordered a JetGlo 360-6 on September 19, 2008. My ETA at that time was 12-18 months...I figured I was in for at least 18-24 months.

My original plan was to pay for her with my upcoming tax return. Well, my upcoming tax return is going to pay off my credit cards instead. I almost feel like bailing on the Ric, but figure I will regret it later. What I'm trying not to do is end up putting the balance back on my credit card when she arrives. Thoughts? Ideas?

Many thanks,

Lynda

PS Forgot to mention that currently I play acoustic, have never played an electric...

Lynda,

if a new 360 is your dream, then make it happen. Don't bail on your order. You could always work something out with the dealer when it arrives and you're broke. They won't be stuck with it very long. I think it's worth a gamble. You've got at least a year to figure it out, so maybe stash away a hunnerd a month or so in the meantime ... where there's a will there's a way. Keep your eyes on the prize, as they say.

That's my thinking anyway, I dunno if it works for you :D

I'd say put some $ down on your order each payday, or stick that equivalent under your mattress.

Thanks Kira,

Yes a 360 is pretty much the only electric I could ever see myself playing, other then perhaps a Les Paul, but that's not a Ric.

Forgot to mention a few tiny details, one, I'm currently saving for my second Larrivee (custom build from Larrivee)...although that being said my Taylor is for sale. Also, just bought my first house and am moving in six weeks.

I think ordering new is the best way to buy them if you're not cash rich, as you can build in a self-installment payment plan with the waiting time.

Kira's right. Stick it out. Stash what you can. It'll likely be a while before it arrives, ample time to come up with the cash for what you want. We all have regrets, but you'd hate to look back and let this be one of them.

You must've ordered it through Long & McQuade, right?
They finance.

This is exactly what I have been thinking that if I drop out that I'm gonna regret this. I should have enough saved for the rest of what I owe on the Larrivee by the end of the month give or take one more pay period.

The day after I placed my order with the dealer in Toronto he phoned me back and told me that Rickenbacker told him my wait would be 12-18 months. Any idea how accurate this is? My sixth sense has been yelling that it will be here by Christmas 09.

God no! Not unless I wanted to pay more or less MRSP which is what they quoted me. I bought mine at Steve's in Toronto.

The way Canadian dealers have been ordering and getting shipments, I think you'll have the full 18 months until it comes in - if not longer.

That would certainly help if that were the case.

Lynda, your situation sounds amazingly parallel to mine. I'm not known as an electric guitar player, either. And like you, never have owned one before. And like you, can't really see myself realistically speaking playing anything but a 360/12 (in my case.)

I did just exactly what Kira advised; stashed a few bucks away every month. Not only did I manage to build up a Rick slush fund, but I did it twice. The first slush fund got spent on a new water heater when the old one died. I think you can do it.

Jim,

You have just managed to me feel remarkably better about this. I don't even know what the heck I'm gonna do for an amp, but I think I'll figure that out later.

When I started my guitar journey in March 08, I had NO idea I would gonna end up with a collection, at least not this fast!
