I was listening to the show mainly, as I also did some work in the basement during the 1st half of the game. The big non-visual impression I got was how out of tune he sang. His voice quality also may not be what it once was. I don't know if the intonation thing was a result of not enough "monitor" earpiece sound, or if that is how it usually is. Maybe those who've heard Springsteen live over his career could comment.

The closest thing to Bruce's singing was my memory of hearing Roger Waters try to sing at Live 8. I couldn't get through all of that youtube video.

I've never owned a Springsteen CD, but he's certainly been a big part of the music scene in the USA over the years.

i did not see it,(not a futball fan), but bruce and ESB seldom disappoint in concert. hopefully i will catch it on youtube or somewhere else. my interest in bruce has waxed and waned,i really cannot get into his appalachianesque solo stuff, but when he's working with a BAND, whew! fwiw,i've always admired bassist gary tallent, who i beleive has had a rickenbacker-free career....... :P

An appearance at a Super Bowl halftime has always been the final 'lowest rung of the ladder' in my estimation of a particular artist's 'career'. They've invariably been making me sicker of themselves for quite some time before they 'grace' the 50 yard line with their presence...This appalling trend in the NFL's 'artistic decision making' is just another thing that's making me "Bo-o-ored of the U.S.A."....I'd much rather hear 50,000 Italians singing a bass line from a White Stripes song...

Whatever happened to marching bands?

(disclaimer: I've never been a big Bruce fan)........
gotta agree with you there, Dane. Personally, I thought that Brucie and the E-street gang sucked.
Not from the Superbowl, but at least there is a Rick in the picture.

My humble advice to The Boss is:cut the size of the band in half and play smaller venues.

Yes, thankfully Li'l Steven's 'doo-rag' was better designed and installed than Janet's 'jug-lid'..

I saw his concert this summer in St. Louis. It was in the top ten concerts I've ever seen and I've seen maybe 250 in my life (I'm old). I thought his voice was way off at the Superbowl compared to when I saw him though. It could have been that they only had about ten minutes to set up, but then again it almost sounded like he had strained his vocal chords recently or that he had a bad cold.

Not his best performance, but I could listen to his music all day. 41 shots is about the most powerful song I've ever heard.

Bruce, like Bob Dylan and others, is a much better songwriter than he is a singer. I happen to like his politics, and agree with much of what he has to say...but I could do without the strained delivery, the odd waddling-about stage presence, and the gigantic 'cast of characters' routinely accompanying him.

All of that being said, the NFL and Big Media aren't as interested in politics as they are in vast numbers of viewers. 'Someone just won an election, let's get Bruce!' Does anyone think the NFL owners skew to the left politically? I hope not.

If McCain had won, we would undoubtedly have seen some dolt in a cowboy hat on the 50-yard line, singing with great fervor about a 'barbecue stain on his white t-shirt'...

Too true, Dane, in every aspect. If Bruce tossed in another 20 folks to his entourage it would be reminiscent of an Elvis show in Vegas.

Ditto here.
Same here. I appreciate where he sits in popular music culture, however I don't own a single Springsteen album.

As far as his signature "Tele" is concerned, it's actually a modded Esquire.

For those interested in his gear this thread might be of interest:-

Always interested in the gear. Thanks for the link.

BTW: I love it when Angelo gets fired up about the 75th anniversary instruments as much as I love to see Paul get fired up about RIC. Just for the record, I like Springsteen. I haven't heard the new album but Magic had the energy of a guy in his 20's. I really loved that album. As for the halftime show, we should go back to two guys in jetpacks flying around the stadium before the game and then landing on the field and shaking hands. Now that was entertainment. Another solid football staple is the frisbee catching dog. Great fun!

Another thing that might help the Super Bowl are two teams worthy of being a champion.

I doubt it. The decision was made a month before the election.
