The tailpiece is too far from the edge of the body to be a real Rick - of course they are not afraid of a few mods it would seem.

Although this is a forum for Rickenbacker basses and the bass in this discussion is not, I don't see any reason so far for a locked thread.

as far as this copy goes it is mix of all parts and whatever they could put their hands on. it is in the tradition of former soviet block luthiers, they will make anything you order. you should see some korina explorers and flying v_s coming from there - amazing. i have seen them last time i was there in mid 90's, it was hard to tell if it was real deal or not..... at least this 12 string ric copy is just inspired and the body is longer too..i guess to match the enormous headstock

I agree that this was either made out of a V63 or made from scratch using a V63 as a model. Looks like real Rick parts to me also: Shoeless horseshoe and real toaster. The photo is a little too grainy to tell for sure, but that's what it looks like.

The tail is mounted so far inboard on the body because the neck is longer.

It's a 22-fretter!

If you're looking at it thinking it's a V63, I can assure it is not.

The luthiers at shamray are incredibly skilled, if they want to copy a design they are able to do so to a Tee.

However, they'll always tell you their more interested in building their original models, the copies pay the bills.

I don't know about anybody else, but I listened to all their clips and was totally under-whelmed. The thing certainly has some novelty value, but across the board on the clips with a band, all I could hear them contributing to the mix was mud. I'd take an eight-string over them any day. It gives the boost to the sound without clogging-up the mix.

Don't knock the 12vers, I play 12string basses for almost everything and that is in folk bands. They can provide so much support for the band without being muddy and really sound nothing like an 8 string bass (which I also play)
8 string basses cut through the middle of the band but a 12ver surrounds and supports the band.
The natural chorus of the 12ver can not be replicated by any pedal, and I have less tuning problems with my basses than the other two guitarists in the band (our fiddle player always seems about perfect)
A 12 string bass needs to be built as one and not a conversion, unless you want "issues"
I consider the 12ver to be like some sort of "Grand Bouzouki" or "Master Lute" and I play it that way..

12vers are awesome! I need another one at some point, my 12 just sold on Ebay.
REALLY want a B12A or B12S, but later down the road. Can't afford one now.

I think that the reason the bridge is closer to the neck and it has 22 frets is because they've shortened the scale a bit to ease tension on the neck. Most 12 string basses I've seen are medium or short scales for that reason.

I think most people see a 12-string bass as being a mere gimmick.
I can understand why that is... They are anything but.

Those of you who happily see the point of an 8-string should be able to grasp the notion
of a thicker top end that fills in really well (for example in a 3 piece group).

I have no tuning issues with either of mine at all.

The biggest problem I have as a bassist, is guitar players who think they know how and where I should fit in the mix and who also seem to feel I'm trying to encroach on their sonic territory with my 8-string.
