CJ, I sure hope my post didn't come of wrong, I did not intent to chide you. I showed my 4003 only to illustrate that most later maple was fairly nondescript, and only recently when RIC went back to the previous supplier has the bodies had more interesting maple.Sorry if I came off haughty, wasn't my intent.cjj wrote:Yeah, that one for looks, and my '76 Azureglo for feel/playability...johnallg wrote:CJ, you are spoiled. That's why 9/10 you try before you buy, especially with a new bass. I couldn't order sight unseen, as I know if it didn't look and feel right out of the box, it probably never would.cjj wrote:teeder wrote:It's not so much the neck, it's kind of the whole package. As far as looks go, I like the fretboard, but the body, though it does have a bit of birdseye, is kinda plain. Not ugly by any means, but for sure, if I'd walked into a store and saw this one on the rack, I wouldn't have bought it. I guess that's the problem with ordering sight unseen. I'm sure others would have different opinions.
The vintage stuff has some rough guidelines, and in most cases, you know how it going to look, and how it going to feel.
The new stuff is a potential crapshoot, depending, of course, on what the subjective mind expects....

No, you didn't come across wrong at all. I was actually going to say that I kind of like your plain maple a bit better than the one I got. It's one of those that if you don't notice the birdseye (which is easy to miss unless the light is just right), looks a lot like plywood (in fact, my wife saw it and asked if they are using plywood nowjohnallg wrote:CJ, I sure hope my post didn't come of wrong, I did not intent to chide you. This one was made 2nd week of Jan 2009, I was really hoping they'd gotten into that rumored "really nice/interesting" maple. Perhaps they have and this is what it looks like.
Now, I suppose I'm coming across a bit wrong too, I'm not really complaining. I've got other basses I really like, so waiting for this one was no big deal, and neither is my not really loving it. It's just a minor disappointment, something I was ready for actually. It's really a nice bass, and it does have some interesting grain and birdseye, just not something that makes me say "OH YEAH!". I'm sure some people would just love it, I have mixed feelings about it, really, and right now, I'm thinking if I'm not absolutely loving it, I probably never will. So, it might be best to move it on and stay on the lookout for one I can fall in love with. Unfortunately, it'll end up costing me a bit more now.
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
Re: 23 Months...
I felt that way about the 4003S MGBT I have - it had a wavy neck when I got it and 1/4"+ of taillift, and I wasn't sure about S basses and also black trim. I got it because of the high praise for S basses, and because it was a good price and MG. Since I am really averse to selling anything (character flaw), I kept it. I got the neck sorted (highly curved rod that had flipped over) and the taillift fixed (thanks to Gary C), and came to terms with the S styling and BT. But it had the heavier, darker 11k higain sound and I never really bonded. Again it sat. Then when I got magnetic shoes and put together an 8k pickup and mounted it to this bass, it had real possibilities to entice me. Still not enough definition, so I mounted a 1973 neck higain and then I had it - the feel and sound I was wanting.
What all this means is give the bass time - you had alluded to using it for a modification platform, so keep that in mind when you weigh things in your mind.

Re: 23 Months...
Yeah, the plan for the new bass was to make it a 5-string, BT, maybe BH too. I actually even considered hacking off the body wings (HOLY COW!
) and putting on some wood I really like. But the neck, I LOVE the fretboard, but the maple, well, it has a lot of dark brown streaks & spots, which I just don't like. My opinion, and it is PURELY my opinion, is that the neck should have been used for a solid painted bass. I sometimes wonder if, in their attempts to cut the backlog, perhaps RIC is a little less selective than in the past (no, I can't blame them for that, I have NO IDEA what they are using for painted models).
I'm not completely decided yet. I have to say, it's nice to be in a position where I really don't need to keep this bass. That's the main reason I tend towards being overly picky, I can be! Then again, the whole thing may be due to a lot of other **** that's going on in my life (like my mom's cancer and impending doom), the economy, etc., etc. Or, maybe not. In any case, I'm not in a huge hurry to get things figured out...

Hey, where's the rest of this story at?!?!? What happened to the MG??? Did you keep it? Mod it? Sell it? I feel like I was really into a great novel only to find out that someone had ripped out the last chapter!!!!
Because I told you before- oh, you can't do that.

Re: 23 Months...
Pretty sure he swapped it for his 4004Cii MG, which is now a 4004Cii MG with 4002 wiring under the hood. Right?
Re: 23 Months...
Yup, that's the story. Sorry I never got back to this thread, a whole lot of other stuff has happened this year.
Anyway, I now have a 4004Cjj in MapleGlo. It used to be a 4004Cii, but it now has the V/T V/T stacked tone knobs, switchable standard or 4002 tone circuit for each pickup, switchable single/dual coil for each pickup, and the ability to run mono or Ric-O-Sound mode. There's a thread on that one too that I need to get back to with some pics of the mods, etc...
