I guess it is an original RIC part , however it is not in original orientation (180 degrees twisted) and beneath could be a HB2 PU instead of a high gain single coil PU (Lemmy needs 4???).

No pickup under the "handrest." Apparently, when you are used to the treble pickup cover being there and rely on it for a handrest, you gotta have it. Lemmy either installed, or requested to have the surround and cover installed on his 4004LK a few years back. This instrument was "in the shop" at RIC during a tour for Forumites at either the 2005 SoCalCon or during the 2006 75th Anniversary tour -- I forget which. At any rate, it's just the cover and surround screwed to the face of the bass.

If it's a fake, it sounds miraculously good. You can hear it on the Triple Play live album. "Take Five" is a good single.

I'm a collector of various things (books, computing equipment and toys from the 70's/80's) as well as stringed instruments, so I can totally identify with the all-original, mint-in-package urge that makes one cringe when seeing massive, non-reversible mods to a valuable and beautiful vintage guitar. However...

My brother and I got a chance to see this exhibit the week it opened in Milwaukee last summer, and among other things, it really changed the way I look at guitar "mods":

There was some fairly interesting stuff about Les Paul's life and career, some cool vintage recording equipment, and some exciting new sound technologies that were showcased, blah, blah, blah. But the real attraction for me was the guitars -- there were two large rooms full of glass cases of guitars, a mix of heavily-modded and/or celebrity-played Les Pauls, as well as a dozen or so franken-prototypes that were hand-built by the (young) man himself. Some of these had nearly as many switches as the thing Paul posted just above me here; some of them had been made partly from household items and/or other "butchered" guitars. It was the most desperate quest for analog "tone" that I'd ever seen, and it was cool as hell. I've got some pics somewhere I might dig up if anyone is interested.

Anyway, I was profoundly affected by seeing the lengths to which this player went (in a non-digital era) to get the sound he wanted. I've never owned a Gibson and don't personally care for the feel/heft of the Les Paul standard body, but I've got a much greater appreciation for the designer now, and for other players who aren't about to be held back from the sound they want by a little bit of routing.
