Vox Ac30 to go with my Ricks.

Post by btomlinson »

I have a new Vox AC30 head. I currently run it throgh a Avatar 2x12 Celestion Vintage 30 cab. Would it make a much bigger difference to use Wharfedale or Blue speakers to get the "Vox" sound?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You might try giong to the Plexi Palace Vintage amp forum, they have a section dedicated to Vox(old and new), and questions like this come up all of the time, and you can post yours there as well. A very popular option over there is 1 blue and 1 green in their combo cabs, check them out, also great mod and repair info.

The blues, of course, seem to be the choice of speakers to have with these amps if you want the best vintage tone. Personally, I can't see spending 600 bucks on a pair of speakers I am:
1)scared to death of blowing
2)make an already bright amp brighter
3)won't be using in a Beatles or similar tribute band.

On top of all of this, are they really 600 dollars "better"? I don't have the cabbage to find that one out. I would also say, buy the Vox 212 cab loaded with the blues so you have a matched set. For just a couple of hundred more new(or less used)you get to experience them in a cab designed for their optimum tone.

I have wharfdales in my Ac30cc2, and they sound fine in the little I get to use it. They still need to be broken in, as my current occupation doesn't allow for the amount of live work I used to do. They seem to get slagged the most because of all the hype surrounding the blues. Apparantly, once they are properly broken in, they sing quite well. I'm happy with my unbroken in ones, but mind you I'm not playing Beatles covers through them, more like The Jam and The Chords.

Something else to consider is North Coast Music sells the speakers they use in their authorized Vox reproduction cabinets. If they are good enough for the people shelling out the big bucks(worth evey penny)for these period correct cabinets, than they should sound as good in yours. Also, they are less than 100 bucks each.

Anyways, here are a few ways to go in making your decision in what you want in cabinet.
