Why GC is not a Rick dealer
I just acquired a 1997 RM from a guy in Dallas. When it arrived I wrote him to ask whether he needed the warranty card that came in the case with the guitar. I like case candy, but this card was for a different guitar. He said that when he bought the 1997 RM from Guitar Center, he needed a case. The 330 case seemed to work. So he buys a Rick but GC makes him buy a case - not even a vintage case at that.

There's a 2001 DG 330 recently listed on the Register (Sept 2008) that fits that description:

Yep, there is that reason and many more......Guitar Center and Ric have incredibly different business mentalities...

Re: Why GC is not a Rick dealer
GC's always done that. My experience is you can usually negotiate for a case without paying extra, but they're not gonna offer up front; same with gigbags for guitars that come with them (Fender Classics, etc.). And at that, it's probably not the case that came from the factory with the guitar.

Re: Why GC is not a Rick dealer
Thanks goofyfoot, you made me laugh.
I bought a used/trade-in 2006 620/6 JG from my local GC a few weeks back. While making sure it had the case (and case candy - including the warranty card) and negotiating the price the sales guy tells me he will give me deal on the case for a dollar.
Odd I thought, don't all Ricks come with the case?
Now I know the rest of the story.

I guess commission salesmen at "un-named" need to fight for every dollar in these recessionary times.... probably against corporate policy to not charge something for the case on the "principle" of the matter for a big-box, volume store.
No doubt a very big thread could be developed on Forumites bad experiences with -- .

Re: Why GC is not a Rick dealer
It's been done, back a few years ago, Richard. I received a nice email from a GC manager following one rant, and he invited me to deal with him, which I did a couple of times. We've since lost touch.
I buy strings at my local GC, and cords, and picks. I once had a manager strung on a Gretsch 6117HT-V (the Harrison Single-Coil Tenny Rose) that was a floor sample. We ended up $75 apart, with me at $1100.00, no sale.
Then MF had their year-end blowout on these and I got a new one for $899.00 with a coupon.
I stopped in today for...strings. Hadn't been in for about 5 months. The salesman greeted me by name (he knows me only as a guy who buys strings). I got a creepy feeling...kept looking for a camera or something. But it wuz cool.

Re: Why GC is not a Rick dealer
On the new guitars they were straight up with me on which came with a case or not (and their info was correct). Now, whether they would have matched with the guitars? That's another matter all together I suppose.
Re: Why GC is not a Rick dealer
When I bought a new SG at GC awhile back, the case didn't match the guitar. There's no serial number on the warranty card, but there WAS a number on the Gibson "checklist" -- didn't match the guitar.
I actually LIKE the GC stores near me. I've bought a number of guitars there, and I always get the bag/case that's supposed to come with the guitar. Unless I'm buying a clearance item, and then you get what you get.
Only ONCE have they ever even tried to do something different. The Tele came with a gig bag, but they offered me a deal on a hardshell case, for a few bucks more.
I've noticed on the GC receipts that they itemize the guitar and the bag separately. Makes me wonder if you could get the guitar for LESS than the tag price, if you said you didn't want the bag???
