drop in replacements for Grover 'wavy'
Hey guys.. I did a search but wow.. there is a lot of info on this site.. And some of the threads change direction so quick I came away a little confused..
Direct drop ins for wavy tuners? They exist? Or even something that would fit with very minimal mods?
Cheers

Re: drop in replacements for Grover 'wavy'
I think that'll be a tough one. Some of the Japanese Rickenfakers had fake Grovers, and I'm pretty sure that we have a member here (in Portugal I believe!) that says they are superior (non-exploding) and the same footprint. But they've got to be pretty close to impossible to find.

Very minimal mods would be the closed back schallers...I have used them many times and they are solid. you will have to make a small hole but it is not that big of a deal unless you just don't like looking at the old holes...Mr.Mow wrote:Hey guys.. I'd rather cover the old holes, Its a beater, so function over form you know!! (and I figure someone out there will probably WANT some functioning wavys!)jaymi wrote:Very minimal mods would be the closed back schallers...I have used them many times and they are solid. you will have to make a small hole but it is not that big of a deal unless you just don't like looking at the old holes...Mr.Mow wrote:Hey guys.. Re: drop in replacements for Grover 'wavy'
OK, can I get a confirmation these are indeed the 'wavy' tuners?.. Why do I ask..? well.. they are on the ricken-faker I picked up.. its a 76-79 (not sure) MIJ copy, its pretty beat up, it will make a great bass to take along to my practice and lessons, seems somewhat sacrilegious to have these tuners on it! (Hence me just wanting something that will drop right in..)

P.S. Just to add.. I've not put them up for sale here or anywhere else.. I'm not looking for offers, I'm not trying to sell them.. just so guys don't get the wrong idea.. Just wanting some advice on replacements..

Re: drop in replacements for Grover 'wavy'
Those appear to be real wavy Grovers on a faker bass, so what you paid for were those tuners.
Re: drop in replacements for Grover 'wavy'
They look like the ones on my '84 4003...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
Re: drop in replacements for Grover 'wavy'
Actually.. you're not far off.. if I can find some easy to install replacements..!jps wrote:Those appear to be real wavy Grovers on a faker bass, so what you paid for were those tuners.

Re: drop in replacements for Grover 'wavy'
So.. are we saying there are NO easy replacements for these grovers?!
I've looked at the spec sheets from Hipshot (theirs almost fit.. except the 'a' string tuner hangs into the top headstock curve by the looks of it), the Schallers which don't seem to fit at all (I mean they fit the post hole, but not much else) Grover who don't have decent specs on their products, Ric don't have specs on their tuners and don't seem to be able to find a definitive 'yes' if they fit properly..
No wonder these damn wavys sell for so much on ebay..
damn.. craziness!!
Look at this.. look how close..

Look for faker Grovers and swap them out!
Seriously, what's wrong with the Grovers that you would want to replace them?

Re: drop in replacements for Grover 'wavy'
Nuthin wrong with them.. Just figure they could probably go to someone with a Ric who may NEED them!!johnallg wrote:Look for faker Grovers and swap them out!![]()

And I hate the way they feel.. They are in 1 piece at the moment, but I'm sure one day they will fall apart like most of them do!
Actually I'm seeing the Hipshot Ultralites may almost be a drop in (1 small screw hole needed, looks like it would go right between the two bottom holes, so later reversal to original would be covered up), the post size is a little bigger, but only 1mm.. thats probably almost a press in..
Only catch is they look pretty modern..

Re: drop in replacements for Grover 'wavy'
Just don't do what the previous owner of my 74 did....obviously he couldn't make up his mind.
Funny thing is, when I bought the bass, he STILL had the original wavy Grovers with the bass.
He threw them in for $75.00 and the originals are now back on the bass....now to get the damn headstock refinished...
