Just bought a weird one?

Post by xcoyle »

I bought this guitar off of Gbase, so many of you may have looked at it there.

It is a 490 type thing.

The neck looks to be a 490. It is bound, dot inlays, 70's 360 size headstock for Grovers, the heel of the neck is square. The guitar was never fitted for a Ric truss rod cover, but rather a short cover. I thought there would be another hole that had been filled or something, but no.

The pickups are Ric 490's, or 481's pickups.

The rest is strange. The pots are 1968 CentraLab's, the switch is a Gibson type (short post), the electronics are back fed. The paint job is very weak.

Since the neck is almost certianly a Ric, and was never sold with a Ric truss rod cover, my thinking is an employee made this for their personal use or something. Or may have been helping in the design of the 490.

any thoughts?

The unstamped bridge and jack plate, also point to a employee build.
