I did my 2007 4003 AFG last night:

1 @ 11.2 cm
3 @ 11.6 cm
12 @ 13.1 cm

I started on my 2008 4003FL AFG last night also but my measuring tape bit into the binding a bit so I stopped to do it later when I was more rested.

1 @ 11.1 cm

Josh, I added the one but will wait for all the 2008 measurements. Are you sure of the 13.1 measurement? Smaller by a bit.

Pretty sure--absolutely sure that I measured it right, but not sure if I'm remembering all the figures correctly. I wrote them down but the paper is at home. I'll double check. It could be 13.2.

I went home for lunch and checked. Sure enough, 13.1. I'll re-measure later if you doubt my accuracy but I thought my method was quite precise. It was harder on the fretless--that's why I didn't continue. (Along with the metal grabber biting into the binding.)

I do not doubt. Not sure how you are measuring. I use a 1/4" wide strip of paper about 8.5" long, wrap it around the neck at the desired fret, and make marks. Then I lay it flat and measure with a mm ruler.

I think I did this right - '66 4005WB:

1st fret: 11.557
3rd fret: 11.684
12th fret: 13.335

I've just been using an extensible measuring tape. Wrap around neck at desired fret as you say, measure to 1/10 cm (any less is imprecise), record. You do have to make sure the tape wraps all the way around "flush" or else you get extra length.

Wow, that's incredibly close to my '74 4001 - and one of the thinnest necks in the recent "thin neck" era. You've gotta love that bass Josh!

My anomalous 4001 walnut (pots date from 1981):

1st: 11.1 cm
3rd: 11.58 cm
12th: 13.09 cm

I used the paper strip method, and converted inches to cm (sorry). But I measured everything carefully three times so it's good :)

Here's one you haven't seen of her:

My favorite thing about the neck is that it's very "stable" feeling. It's not a thin wisp at the start, then a fat stick. It stays fairly constant as far as my hand can tell. Definitely a fun bass to play...

As far as I can tell my 2008 4003FL is nearly identical, if not a bit thinner.

Thanks, John. Doctorwho did me right to offer this one, and gave me a heck of a "players" price because of her "issue" (orig jackplate gone which for me is a non-issue), and because he's just such a nice guy :D I've been thrilled with the way she plays. 8)
