New website

Post by teb »

Well, after some restoration work the old boat still seems to float and was launched the other day. Three CDs out within a month and another one on the way from the Warner Music Group in a couple more months. Gee, the music business is so much faster than it used to be!

Only one gig on the near horizon, a live radio show for WFMT in Chicago in June. Since we have to bring in band members from all over the country, we don't get around too much these days, but it's something to look forward to.

LOOKS GREAT TODD,

I'd like to order the CD that had the sailboat on it, will that be available soon? The one with the two sails, the blue looking one.
I have parts of it on my hard drive and would like the whole thing.

GLAD to see you guys are moving forward!

That's fantastic Todd. I wish you the best of luck with the band and your music.

Tony,
Warner Music Group owns the original Elektra album and released The Ship on Feb.3rd for downloads. They're selling it through iTunes, Amazon and a bunch of the big on-line download sellers. The CD hard copy is scheduled to come out in the next couple of months on Wounded Bird Records, a division of the Warner Group that specializes in re-releases of old vinyl. I know that Wounded Bird has their own on-line store and also distributes CDs through other on-line and retail outlets, but don't know much about the specifics yet. Typical of big record companies, the artists are often left in the dark while the corporation slowly does whatever corporations do. Surprisingly, we still seem to be operating under the original Elektra contract that we signed in 1971. I wonder if it matters that I was only 19 years old when I signed that contract......maybe the whole thing is void :).
I worked up modified graphics to turn the album cover into a CD cover, but don't know yet whether they will use them or design something themselves. You can see them here:

Since we no longer rely on the band as a source of income, it's low-pressure and more fun this time. If the project generates enough cash to pay for itself and preserve the music, that's enough. If it does make some money, we're hoping to get back in the studio and record some of our new stuff.

That's cool Todd !
When looking at the album artwork on your weblink, I was sort of reminded of that Byrd's album "Untitled" ...was that a little bit of the inspiration for your group photo back then on a sailing vessel ?

Rich,
The boat photos were the idea of Bob Heimall, the art director for Elektra back in those days, and photographer Frank Bez, who shot a lot of their album covers. One afternoon they just told us that we were going boating and not to wear cowboy boots. We sailed out of Marina Del Ray and spent an afternoon on the boat shooting pictures and trying to look like we knew what we were doing. They even shot a bunch of stuff for a video. Actually, I guess it was a film, because it was shot with movie cameras. Later, they put together a 15-20 minute promo piece with music from the album and footage shot on the boat. We had to join the Screen Actors' Guild so that we could stand around and be phony sailors. I don't think they ever did much with it though. This was right about the time when Warner bought Elektra and a lot of things and plans changed when the big guys took over. I think we only saw the movie once. It just goes to figure that we would be in a music video, but unfortunately, years before there were any outlets like MTV or VH1 to play it on.

Teb: A great site. There are some outstanding vocals here. Thanks for sharing it.
