Did anyone see him in Florida Feb/27/2009?

Post by jdogric12 »

I was out in Orlando for SERF, but McGuinn played in Largo that Friday night. Did anybody go? I was trying to get him for SERF, but he left for the midwest the next day (Sat.) and couldn't attend. Just wondering if he's doing the same show as I saw last April, with the whole Gene Tryp mini-set.

He is going to be here in Fairfield, OH this Saturday, March 14. My wife and I have tickets 4th row, dead center. I saw him here back in Feb. 2007, I am anticipating the same show that he did then. I will let you know next week.
FYI... I sent Roger an e-mail offering to let him borrow both my Martin HD-7 and my Rick 370/12 RM, but have not received a response yet

He is playing in the Village Green at the Fairfield Community Art Center. As of Sunday, there were still tickets available.
Here is a link to their website. Roger is part of the Sojourner concert series, where the proceeds benefit a local charity.

Roger's concert this past Saturday, March 14, was an outstanding event. Roger was very personable with his stories and anecdotes, and the sold out crowd definitely appreciated the man and his music. He received 3 standing ovations, and he was obviously pleased with the crowd, too. The only major bummer of the show was the poor job the theatre did on their sound engineering. Roger started the show walking on stage playing his Rickenbacker 370/12, playing "My Back Pages."
The guitar, unfortunately couldn't be heard, and the microphone he sang into wasn't even turned on for his first few words. He apologized, stating that the guitar wasn't working properly, and he switched to his 7 string Martin and finished the song. He played the 7 string and his Martin 12 string for the rest of the show, and didn't try the Rickenbacker again.
He played quite a few Byrds tunes; "Mr. Tambourine Man," Chestnut Mare," Turn, Turn, Turn," "The Ballad of Easy Rider," "Mr. Spaceman," "So You Want To Be A Rock And Roll Star," "Pretty Boy Floyd," "Eight Miles High," and "Feel A Whole Lot Better." He also played "St. James Infirmary," and "May The Road Rise to Meet You," from his Limited Edition cd, as well as a couple of other folk songs, and "You Showed Me," the first tune he wrote with Gene Clark, which went on to be a hit single for The Turtles. He even played an early Elvis tune, as he credited the King for inspiring him to learn guitar!
Roger's wife, Camilla was lovely and charming, as usual, selling Roger's cd's in the lobby.
If you get the chance to see Roger in your area, don't pass it up; you will never regret it. :D

Yikes! That sucks. It really ain't a McGuinn show without at least some RIC stuff.

I'd demand my money back.

Ironically, I had half jokingly told Roger in an e-mail to him , when I first bought the concert tickets three months ago, he could borrow my 370/12 RM if an unforseen circumstance gave him need for another guitar .

I wonder how easy or difficult it would be to book him. I followed the links for booking information and was quite intimidated by what I saw. I think it would be wonderful if the Americana Music Academy could bring him to Lawrence.

Jim,
You may want to send a message to Sojourner Recovery Services here and ask the booking question. They have booked Roger here both in 2007 and 2009 for a theatre that only holds I would guess 300 or less maximum. Brent Russell has been pretty easy to communicate with here.

Contact the folks on his site for booking. I would have had him for SERF if he wasn't going to the Midwest the day after the aforementioned Florida show.

The walk-out mishap happened when Tony and I saw him in Stuart last year too.

Yeah, I think his booking info is online.

Be forewarned, he has (like most everyone) a huge Rider.

Thanks Steambyrd for the 3/14 heads up. The wife and I have tix for 3/21 in Elgin, IL (Chicago area). She's as pumped as I am, even tho she can't tell a Ric from a Tele (by sight anyway). She says she can hear the diff. I played the Limited Edition CD for her with very positive response. Last time we saw RM was 3-4 years ago. He played his Ric thru a JC 120. It sounded like @#%$, (too tinny, trebly and thin). The acoustic stuff was much better.

Will advise of the show on Monday. Anybody else out there going?

Yeah, hence my comment about being real intimidated by the whole process. I saw enough of the rider.
