Right this minute, I own:

72 4001 JG (soon to be reborn as autumnglo)
73 4001 FG (Jan 73 -- all the goodies)
08 4003 VP JG

... either the 73 or the 08 is probably going out the door soon, as soon as I get a chance to play the 73 and compare them.

Sold ... oy. Let's see.
4003 Shadow
4001CS
4001v63 FG
4001c64 JG
4001c64s
78 4001 autumnglo (my first Ric)
73 4001 FG (May)
73 4001 MG (June)
73 4001 MG (July)
79 4001 Walnut
two 4003 MB (I think there were two different ones?)
4003S/5 MID
06 4003 AFG
98 4003 MG

... about half of those to forumites (mostly Bryce).

The 08 is killer, the 78 autumnglo was the prettiest, the Shadow was the most exciting acquisition, and the v63 was probably the best sounding (the c64s was close). I got to try so many that I have a good sense of what I like now, and I am not likely to keep one I won't gig with. Plus I figure if I keep buying and selling so many, the wife won't notice when a few more stick around in the end. (Just kidding -- that doesn't work.)

My next three basses: Kevin's '69 4000/4001s, John Fay's '68 4001, and Eden's RM. :)

Three and a half:

'74 4000 MG (was FG)
'74 4001 AZ
'00 4001 V63 JG

The half:
'72/3 4001 Ruby restoration ongoing...

Frank Grubisa, restorer and luthier extraordinaire, has spent more time with this bass than I have.

One which isn't broken (well, not totally yet): my '93 V63 which is on the way towards near RM-hood. The other is the carcass of the '76 4001 which I've tried in vain to resuscitate. I'm not sure it would take paint in it's current state, much less strings.

My plans for when I achieve wealth beyond riches include a replica of a '64-'67 era Deluxe 4001 made from a modern 4003 (a real 60s bass just isn't in the budget or cards I don't think) which would alternate as main bass with the "V-RM". I'd also love to convert a modern thicker-necked 4003 into a '60s-style 4008 with all the vintage goodies too, and have Paul W finish it in "shaded green" or Kermitglo or whatever they call it these days. :)

I think I could be happy with three. But I won't turn down more if the universe chooses to grant them.... :o
