A new-old member

Post by Becky »

While reading some of the other posts in here, I too thought to myself, 'has it really been ten years (or more)?' I was there in the early days of the newsgroup, and I watched the successive iterations of Peter's Rickenbacker website. I suppose I dropped off the internet's musical radar for a long time, but then quite recently I happened across this forum while (I think) searching for some obscure bit of information on effects pedals, or Chris Squire, or something like that.

The black '95 4003 (no. 211 in the Register) is, naturally, still in my hands and still sounding good. I did entertain a little laugh when I heard about the newer basses coming with the capacitor option, recreating some of the nuances of the classic models. That wiring modification was something I did to mine very early in its life. The bass fell off its stand at one stage and damaged the wings of the headstock, but otherwise it's accumulating a nice gradual patina. The paint is still jet black, but the binding is a lot more yellow than it used to be!

As for newer additions, for a long time I've used a mix-and-match set of Rotosounds, for a heavy bottom and medium top and I entertained a second little laugh when I discovered that Billy Sheehan's signature set was almost identical to mine, but less expensive to buy! It has to be British Steel for me.

And, as another who went along to see Rush's Snakes and Arrows tour, yes:, A Passage to Bangkok was fab. :D

You're right, Peter, and a beautiful one she is. In fact I wish I was there now, in spite of the weather

Becky: A great post and let me echo the sentiments of those who have already responded, welcome back!

Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Thank you all! If I can encourage my camera to photograph black actually as black rather than a strange magenta-brown, I'll see if I can post a photo or two to the appropriate gallery or thread. You have to promise not to laugh at my grotty fingerboard though!

I had to search on the internet just now for a website I remembered vaguely: the Rickenbacker Project, run of course by that Evil Bob chap. Back then, and somewhat predictably perhaps, that site led me to buying my first Yes album. I was already familiar with much of the then Rush catalogue by way of MIDI file recreations and a few CDs, and I started out by listening to Close to the Edge. If a band released an album today with only three songs on it, they'd be laughed out of HMV. :D It was some time after that I found out that this Yessish-sounding song called 'Hold Out Your Hand', with someone who wasn't Jon Anderson singing, was actually from Squire's solo effort. At the time I had presumed it to be 'that guy who replaced Jon on one album'. The girl's excitement two or three years later at finding a copy in her local second-hand record shop was considerable. Suffice to say, for I am getting mildly carried away with reminiscing, it's one of my most listened to -- and, er, jammed along to  -- albums. I listened to it today too, actually...

Good for you to still be listeing to that great album!

Those of us who were fortunate enough to go to RIC's 75th anniversary weekend, the end of August '06, got to see Chris play some of that album at the Sunday evening House Of Blues concert. :D
