Ok... Just looking at the calander here.... How does Saturday June the 6th sound to everyone? Say late afternoon... so that after jamming for a bit we can go grab beer and chicken wings somewhere afterwards...

June 6 sounds good to me.

Let's put together a list of songs and then vote for the top five or six.

I'll recommend some Beatles--"I Saw Her Standing There," and "Can't Buy Me Love"--and REM--"The One I Love" and "Losing My Religion"

I can think of a bunch more depending on how ambitious we want to get and how strictly we want to adhere to the Rickenbacker sound.

Joe:

I can play all of the Beatles songs, and LOSING MY RELIGION already... don't know the other REM one, although I can learn it I am sure. Been working on their song IMITATION OF LIFE.. If I am bringing the 12 string how about THE WAITING by Tom Petty?

So Saturday June 6th then from 4 pm to 8 pm… Does that sound good for everyone? Plenty time for beer afterwards somehere.

We should call it ORAC… Ontario Rickenbacker Appreciation Confluence.

ORAC was also the name of the computer on the 80’s British Sci-Fi TV Series BLAKES SEVEN… a happy omen.

And attending so far will be…

Lynda are you in too?

The last final question for me is the where… Hamilton at Lou’s Rehearsal space on Upper James? (http://www.lousmusic.com/) Or back in Toronto at some as yet to be determined location (Same place the last one was held??) It just has to be someplace where we can plug in and turn up the volume.

I should post something too in the confluence section of the forum once we have the time and location confirmed.

Depending on the numbers, Coll Audio in Scarborough might be a possibility once again. There's a jam room and Craig has a lovely selection of vintage amps to choose from!

That would be fine with me too. I don't really care about the where as I have wheels... (If anyone needs a lift from Hamilton let me know)...

Advantage to that is that it is free? Lou's would cost us $75 at least, which would mean a small registration fee to cover it...

I would guess that 20 is the likely attendence in the end, as I can think of a few more RIC types not on this forum who might come.

The key is a place where we can make noise, take pictures, and shoot some video, so that we generate the interest to make it into an annual thing.

So erm... Toronto or Hamilton??

Heard back from Lou's Music.. They would be happy to have us although it sounds like the largest room they have wouldn't be able to handle more then about 15 people.

We need to firm up a location--Hamilton or Toronto. I'll start a new thread later on tonight with a poll. We also need to get a handle on some of the numbers so we can find a space. I'm wondering if a bar or similar venue might be more manageable than trying to squeeze twenty of us into a practice room. We could rotate through rotate through a six, seven or eight person ensemble--and provide the entertainment. Just a thought. Any advice from those who have done this before?

Joey - I was thinking the same thing regarding the venue as it sounds like both that have been discussed have space limitations. An ability to make some noise, (sorry - I meant "art"), is great, but we might also need display space as these meetings have an element of "show and tell" to them. A Hamilton Vs. Toronto poll would be great as well.

I am open to all of this... Perhaps the banquet hall attached to a pub... The one I know is the Pheasent Plucker where the Hamilton Folk Club meets on Augusta Street, its a second floor above the main pub there. You can usually get these spaces for free as long as a certain number of people show up so that the pub can run a bar/food service... Cause that's how they make their money.

Toronto or Hamilton makes no difference to me...

I would like to get a venue confirmed so that I can start to promote it a bit - start a facebook group or event etc.

There are likely a few RIC owners I know that would attend who are not apart of this forum... I like the rotating ensemble idea, - also as we likley play in many different styles.. It means people could sign up to be apart of various groups... 60's/Byrds, Beatles, New Wave, Rush fans etc..

I'm beginning to think that this is going to be more than just a small get-together. If we are looking at 15-20+ people, I can't see how a practice room would work. The Pheasent Plucker is not a bad idea, but would we be able to safely display our wares. Also, we'd have to think about getting equipment.

The larger it gets, the more I'm inclined to lean towards Toronto. Though Hamilton does offer some advantages such as hotel prices.

With all this in mind, Mississauga, Oakville, or Burlington might be considered as well. We need suggestions. Does anyone know a venue--hotel, bar, practice room--that could accommodate us? Ontario_Ric_fan and I seem to have a handle on Hamilton.

Joe.

BTW, if its not clear, I'm willing to take an active roll in organizing the event.

Yes!! (And there was much rejoicing!) That's really cool Joe...

This will only work if we create a commitee and set some deadlines... Equipment is likely the least worry... Free or very cheap space for 20+ people is the real question to me... It also raises questions about how public an event this should be... Anyone who ones a RIC?? Should we send out a press release and get listed in NOW, EYE and VIEW? Or just keep it "invitation only"...

All of this will effect the size of it in the end.

As someone who has attended a couple of forum confluences, allow me to make a few observations.
Other confluences have been mostly involved folks on this forum, and I think this idea adds a lot to fostering the community that Peter has created for us. Its wonderful to finally be able to meet other forumites in person and put a face and voice to the written words we see. Aside from the logistical problems in planning a more "open" event, I would also be concerned about the security of my instruments if the event had been advertised to the public at large. I think if we keep it in-house, we should be able to quickly get a feel for the numbers and the type of venue we need. At the last TO mini-confluence I organized in 2006, we pretty much got the numbers we were expecting (10-12), but I think we're correct in looking around 20+ for this get-together. As I mentioned previously, the confluences tend to be a mix of meeting other forumites, ogling over Rickenbackers, and if there's an opportunity to jam, thats even better. I appreciate Brian and Joey stepping up to the plate, and I would certainly be willing to help with getting this off the ground! :)

Well I think all of this discussion is good, because it is allowing us to define the terms of the event...

So invitation only... only and 20 people is the target...

Certainly I want to ogle other people's Rickenbackers!

Um.... no!

I think any folks who would be interested in attending a Rickenbacker confluence are probably aware of this forum, so any announcement here should reach the folks most likely to attend.
