Advice needed: Should I get a shadow??

Post by gibsonlp »

Hi guys, long story - but I'll try to make it short:
For a while now, I've been craving for a shadow, basically ever since I saw Ilan's shadow I fell in love as this is a really amazing instrument and I don't even like jetglo! :)
A few months ago, a forum member wanted to sell his shadow for $2K, I wanted to buy it but I couldn't get enough high-res pictures to decide if it worth it or not (it did have some scratches and dings, nothing that looks TOO serious though...)
I didn't buy it eventually and it went to the bay where Olivia bought it, took some good photos and sold it for $3K to galahad studios in Ohio.
And now... Galahad studios are selling it, I thought that something might be fishy but the guy says they bought a new mixing console and have to let go of the shadow... Sounds convincing enough, especially since he agreed to a local pickup and cash upon pickup (he can't run with the money and I still get to see the bass before money exchanges hands).
This shadow is missing the pickup cover and the mute pad screws, however - there are 3(!) pairs of black mute screws currently on the bay and 1 pickup cover, so I will be able to actually restore this bass to 100% originality.
I believe I will be able to fetch this shadow for it's opening price which is $2000.

In less than 2 weeks we'll be at my wife's parents' house in Milford, Michigan which is 3 hours drive from a personal pickup and a very rare opportunity to get it back with me on the plane (Shipping instruments to Israel is REALLY expensive).

My brain says no (my wife just quit her job and it might be stupid to touch our "buffer" money) but my heart says YES.
You can see some good pictures here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0281103183
It's not in pristine condition - do you think it worth that $2k?
So long and thanks for all the fish!

I'm surprised it is still on Ebay and It will certainly be worth the price once economies are in better shape. But I was hoping it would go lower (it is on ebay for at least the second round now) and I would have the funds myself. ;-) (So you better buy it and stop me having this dillema.)

The investment value of the Shadow is probably alot better than most 401K's right now.

I played one recently, and it was lovely. Real nice neck profile, better than anything I'd played from the mid 70's on. Investment potential has to be up there, especially compared to a CS, simply because of low numbers made.

Of course, if I had one, I'd strip it, and paint it white...

That one has sold....Did you get it Gil?

If not, just stand in the sunshine today.....

Save your money and wait for the price to drop. You can always get a bass, but a little savings never hurts for a rainy day!

Thanks for the answers guys!
Andrew - I didn't get it but this auction is an old one, the current auction is still active.
Jaymi - That is NOT our savings, it's simply a portion of some money we have in our bank balance. Our savings are our savings and I am not planing on using any of this money on a Rick :)

Jeffery - sure, I would love to meet you!
And I would be very happy if you could check it out for me, but unfortunately I have only 1 day to decide, any chance you'll be there today or tomorrow morning your time? :)

Thanks again!
So long and thanks for all the fish!

I saw that the auction closed at $2000 and assumed that Gil had won it.

Nopes :(
Not me, someone else bid on it and I decided that $2K was the most I was willing to pay for it and didn't want to get into a price fight for nothing.

It would be REALLY odd if it was Olivia who bought it after selling it to the guy for $3K... Talk about easy money...
So long and thanks for all the fish!
