1973, at long last...
Well, I've always wanted a nice May '73-or-earlier 4001. Over the last several years I've turned a '77 4001 MG into a '77 Walnut, and a '77 Walnut into a '74 MG. And now, a '74 MG + $$$ =
...a March '73 JG!!!
Photos of this particular bass are already in the gallery: http://www.rickresource.com/register/ga ... 73&month=3 - perhaps a good forumite owned it before?
Either way, I friggin' love it. A month earlier or so and I'd have MOP inlays, but honestly the acrylic ones are just killer. It's even got a screw-top hi gain in the bridge, not to mention the weird sharp-corner '72-style surround. And it's so stock (at least as far as my eye can tell). Judging by the wear, it looks like the pickup cover's never even been taken off. Also someone played the hell out of it, which I plan to continue doing...
Just had to spread the joy. No more trading up for me - any 4001's I buy from now on are pure gravy!

Congrats, Jeff!
I agree about those inlays, they do look great, in their own way. Here are some on my March '73 4001

JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS!

At least two other forumites have owned it in the last 12 months.badeggs wrote: perhaps a good forumite owned it before?

Congrats and welcome, Jeff!
Re: 1973, at long last...
Thanks for the info, Jason! A few of the inlays do pop up a tiny bit, but nothing too noticeable. I thought I heard once this happens when the wood in the fretboard shrinks slightly over many years. Either way, they seem pretty secure in there...it's a hell of a player. So nice to be in the "73 Club" after all these years!jdogric12aolcom wrote:At least two other forumites have owned it in the last 12 months.Enjoy, and welcome! It is a great player. Are the inlays still popping out some? I never had a problem with it but you may wish to address it if you plan to keep it for some time.

Congratulations on finally getting your dream bass, Jeff!
I agree about the "player" thing...my May '73 feels and sounds just right for me.
