I suppose you could have one Rick with two different types of strings, but that might be a little weird...johnallg wrote:The only way to really get the THUMP and GANK. Which of course is why I need to get my 4001 up to 100%, as the GANK is just as desirable as the the THUMP.

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

That would sound really bad.[/quote]JakeK wrote:I'd love to hear a 4005 with the bridge pickup and full on amp treble playing "The Seeker" by the Who.
John B's aspersions in the general direction of treble aside
Now, on the other hand, run both pickups flat out (or even better, split 'em in stereo, Ric-O-Sound or not), throw a set of Rotos on there, and 'tis a joyous noise indeed, IMHO! That would probably float your boat on "The Seeker", Jake, and it's probably what ol' Ox did, give or take....

Now I'm going to have to try that!cjj wrote:I suppose you could have one Rick with two different types of strings, but that might be a little weird...johnallg wrote:The only way to really get the THUMP and GANK. Why stop there? Why not have one flat, one round, one nylon tape-wound, and maybe a plain high G just for good measure?

I'm with you there!I couldn't agree more that anything played on just the treble pickup of a '60's 4005 would sound awful. (My experience throughout my teens and twenties playing my mother's '66 4005 O.S. taught me this at least!) '60s toaster + extreme bridge position + .0047 cap minus any mitigating factor of the neck toaster = painful, teeth-grinding, baritone guitar sound. And that's with flats!![]()

As a representative of the Gank contingent, I'd like to offer an olive branch across the great ideological divide which has cleft us asunder from each other, and say that I respect and embrace the Thump. Live and let live! Er, or die, if Macca's is more the bass tone one is after....
I even tracked a pair of songs recently with Roto flats on my V63, in mono and everything, and the end result was more like Clunk. Go figure!

Olive branch cheerfully accepted. At work today, one of my bass students asked me to teach him "Long Distance Runaround". After taking the time to figure it out and notate it, I have a new found respect for the gank contingent. Wow!pacealot wrote: "You say tom-ay-to, I say to-mah-to...."

P.S. - We continue onto "The Fish" next week.

Actually one of the easier ones to play. This could have saved you time, John:

I can't understand why the treble pickup on the 4005 was placed there! I suspect it was for aesthetic reasons.
If it were placed where the 4001 bridge pickup is, I think the 4005 would have been vastly superior.

First off, Welcome Bethan!! ah, what good taste you have.
I too was in that same position of leaning up against the wishing well and experiencing nothing...for quite a while.
Then Kaboom
Stay focused, save dough, sell that Zephyr Zodiac jalopy too!
I play with a female bassist, and I do believe there is different chemicals
going on with bass lines! I love it!! WELCOME !
Don't get me started talking about the attributes of the 4005
I'd bore you to tears!
