Susanna Hoff's 350SH Modification

Post by anonymous »

When Susanna Hoff's received her Model 350SH Limited Edition Rickenbacker from RIC the instrument had a humbucking pickup in the bridge position and toaster top pickups in the middle and neck postions. Image
During the September 2000 Tour with The Bangles Susanna is playing a 350SH with humbucking pickups in all three positions. Assuming that this is the same instrument presented to her by RIC it would seem that she has opted for a hotter sound. This modification is seen in the following photo.Image
The last photo is of Susanna Hoffs on September 1, 2000 in California. Image

I found this posting in the archives, and several more recent references to Susanna Hoffs' modified Rickenbacker 350SH models. I thought I should clear this up.

Not long after Susanna got the guitars her guitar tech convinced her to switch to EMG pickups. My in-house repair man did the modification on this instrument, which includes three EMG SA (Stratocaster) pickups under Rickenbacker humbucking covers and a replacement pickguard with a 5 way Strat switch. The guitar sounded great this way, although I do not recommend the necessary routing and epoxy required to do this mod...

Mystery solved.

It's like driving a 1950s Corvette, but having a 1990s Lexus engine under the hood. I mean, it might be technically better... but it hasn't got the same soul - and it's just not the point.

Very disappointed in Susannah tonight! (Even if she is still remarkably cute well into her 40s or however old she must be, these days... but I digress...)

There's a nice little article on the Bangles in this month's Vintage Guitar.

Not to mention a pic of Joe Walsh playing his Frey model at a Clapton event!
