Favourite Radio Show on Television

Post by admin »

I would be interested in your favourite television show of a radio show. There are many but one that I found to be a hoot was WKRP. I would be interested in knowing what features of this show were realistic. Stan?
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

A few elements of the show could be considered realistic. Mainly, the characters. Dr. Johnny Fever embodied a bit of a few personalities I've been around, and likely, even myself. Being fired, like Fever had been so many times, was a badge of honor for most on-air people. I could go in longer detail about some jocks I've worked with, who favor Dr. Johnny, but won't at this time. Herb Tarlek(sp) the sales manager incorporated many of the same traits of any radio salesperson. Bad outfits with an obnoxius personality to boot.
Long after the show ran I had both the late Gordon Jump (the GM) and Frank Bonner (Herb) on one of my shows for an interview. It was interesting to hear how they developed their characters.
The famous 'Turkey Episode', has its roots in reality, but not on the radio. Back in the 1940’s, a “Turkey Trot Festival” was started in Yellville, Arkansas. It featured a turkey-calling contest, a turkey target shoot, a Miss Drumsticks Pageant, and--believe it or not--a live turkey release from the roof of the courthouse.
You can imagine the results. "Oh, the humanity!"

I can only imagine what the Miss Drumsticks Pageant must have been like!
