I was just reminiscing over my 1963 Fiesta Red Stratocaster that I bought in 1975 for $225, very clean, OHSC. It was burgled from me about three weeks later.

Or my "72 SG Standard that I bought new. For the life of me I can't remember where it went Hey, it was the Seventies I still shed an occasional tear about that one.

Or my little mapleglo Combo 950 that I bought for $75 and traded away a few years later

Perhaps a little group therapy would help.

So commiserate with me here - tell us about your long lost grails, and in the telling perhaps we can all soothe those grievous stings ...

A '64 Jazz Bass that I bought in '66 for cashews and sold in '69 for peanuts!!

I have but two:

A Gibson Les Paul Signature Bass - sold for $500 in 1983. It looked great but was a total load of rubbish to play. The neck made a baseball bat seem slim, and the pickup was horrid.

A '71 Fender Mustang bass in CAR with stripes - sold for $300 in 1982. My first Fender bass - it just never sounded quite right.

My '50's model Les Paul Jr. I traded it for a junky 12 string acoustic. Damn drugs.

1987 4003 FG. My first Rick, my first real bass after my Gibson Ripper, my first bass to ever go into debt over. Gads, I miss that bass! Sold it to a music store along with two Midiverbs for a lousy $400 in 1989 so I could get a motorcycle.

'Course, the bike is gone too.

Had a mid 70's J bass. 74 I think..bought it off a girl I worked with for $200 in 1982. Shoulda never let my first Ric, the 79 4001jg go..traded it for a 75 fretless P Bass which I shoulda never let go...Why I don't own a v63 when 5 have passed through my hands is beyond me.....

I went through a real bad stretch in my life 19 years ago. I'm literally choking as I write this , but here is a partial list of what I was forced to sell ; 1962 Sunburst Strat ,1955 /6 (body dtd Dec 55, neck Jan 56) Blonde Strat , 1964 Gibson SG Std. , 1954 Les Paul Goltop ,3 LP Jrs
56, 57 and 59. 1964 Cherry Firebird VII.52 Telecaster , 58 Telecaster, All these were completely original except the 52 Tele had changed pots. All had original cases. There were more , but the WORST was one I had in 1974 , a genuine '58 Gibson Explorer. I bought it from a friend on payments , lost my job and had to return it. Boy, it actually feels good to tell this- you know, cathartic. Thanks for the thread Kira. At least I still have pictures of 'em all.

How about shouldas?? I did not get the '64 Hofner "Beatle" bass that was in a local music emporium (this was in '69) as it was $400 and I was saving for a car. What an idiot. Also not buying the 4001JG in '71. Again, cost - I was one of two paying to rent the group house...

Not many regrets here - they're all fun for a while, then it's time to move onto something else (with some exceptions). Most of them are fairly replaceable.

I passed up a Shadow at Mandolin Bros. for $1295 back in summer '05; the hang tag said "Blackstar". That one stung for a while.

I've owned a few Jazzmasters and I really wish I had kept the last one I had (CIJ, white, block inlays, matching headstock, USA pickups, set-up perfectly); though I have been referring to my Mosrite Ventures as a "Jazzmaster killer"...

i have gone through so many,like john,not too many regrets for the most part,EXCEPT.....66 CAR Fender jazz bass,58 fender broadcaster,an early stringray bass,my first rick bass (a throo neck 4000 circa 68-70),and one i think about often these days, a viellette-citron 8 string one pickup bass in a light tobacco sunburst....that thing had grunt,punch and clarity,and a great neck....i don't even have a picture of it .....(wah ).....

No major heartache, but more like every once in a while I little nostalgia for an old girlfriend . I miss my Lennon Rev Casino sometimes, as I do my first Ric, a 350v63FG. Also a custom-ordered G&L Legacy Deluxe I sold a few years back.

I tend to regret missed purchase opportunities more than guitars I've sold. There was a Fender CS pin-up Strat a few years back, a stunningly beautiful guitar I was convinced was going to sell for over $2K--wound up going for around $1600. I also failed to take a shot at Ric 325/12 a while back...they don't pop up too often.
