Anyone interested in a 660/12 JG?

Post by kelly »

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of selling my Jetglo 660/12 and I thought I would check around the Canadian Chapter first to see if anyone was looking for one. I bought it new in March 2005, its serial number starts with an 05. Its in mint condition with all the case stuff minus the warranty card, which I mailed in. I also had the octave strings reversed so you hit them first, which I know is heresy to some people but it sounds better to me that way. The nut didn't have to be recut to do it, so its a simple matter of restringing it the Rickenbacker way if you prefer.

I'm selling it because I've just come to the point where I have to admit that I'm a terrible 12-string player and there are a couple of 6-string models I'd like to pick up. Plus I have a Guild 12 string acoustic that I really love and prefer to play. Current list is $3109 US and these are hard to come by in Canada so I'd like to get around $2200 CDN for it plus shipping. I can send pics if anyone wants them, but there's nothing unusual about it - its your standard gorgeous 660/12 JG. It'll either wind up being traded in or listed on eBay or in the RRF Marketplace soon so let me know if you're interested or have any questions.

Am I being a bit optimistic on the price? With the exchange its about $1750 US...maybe anything above $2000 CDN is good - any opinions?

Hi Kelly,

I also have a similar era 660/12 (FG). I think your selling price is probably ok. I think your market timing is not so great. With things slowing down and people losing jobs like no tomorrow (or thinking they may lose it), folks are a little reluctant to shell out big bucks on a luxury. I know I play mine all the time, live and at home, but it is an extravagance (mine is not, nor will it be anytime soon, for sale).

Also don't forget, outside of this forum, the solid body Ric 12s are very rare and quite obscure in Canada. Not many players here that can afford a $2K guitar know about these beauties and how much of a dream they are to play.

Obviously you've been watching the bay, Craigslist and maybe even Kijiji. Take a look at how long any one piece of kit selling for $2k or more stays listed. On average, the list time is very long. It is just not a great time for sellers of high end instruments at the moment. If you can be patient, you'll get at least $2k for the 660. Stay the course.

Yeah, despite all the doom and gloom out there I'm doing my best to continue spending my remaining disposable income on guitars. I think you're right about the situation economically and Rickenbacker-y in Canada too, which is a shame. I was thinking of selling the 660/12 to pay for a really sweet (other brand) guitar I've always lusted after, but my girlfriend loves guitars almost as much as me and is loaning me the money. So the 660/12 is staying, which deep down I'm really happy about - those guitars are really cool. So it all turned out pretty great...too bad she can't do anything about my inability to play a 12-string! :D

I think I may need finger reduction surgery along with the lessons! They can do it with stomachs, why not fingers?

That is definitely a must-have but to pricey.

Well I actually wound up trading it in on the other guitar I mentioned. Usually when I get the itch to get rid of something I've had for a while, I just play it and I fall in love again. Not so with the 660/12 - once I started playing it I was reminded of how lousy I am on 12-string guitars! So its gone to a new home where hopefully it fulfills its promise with a new set of fingers.
