Source for Toaster bobbins?

Post by ocduff »

I'm sure they're unobtanium, but I'd like to wind up some handwound coils without having to ruin the windings in my scatterwounds on my c58. Anyone know where to source toaster bobbins? Can anyone confirm if aftermarket pickup bobbins will fit a traditional toaster.

The purpose of my asking is basically because I just can't bring myself to ruin a perfectly good $200 scatterwound toaster in order to "improve" it by handwinding it. Sure, it may still be worth the same, but I just hate cutting into working coils.

I've played hand rewound and vintage Toasters in my shop and they sound incredible. The scatterwounds sound nice, but they have this brittle, solid state'ish sort of high end that bugs me. I'm a snob, I know. But I did just rewind a Rick coil for a customer and it sounded amazing in comparison.

Thanks in advance for any leads - perhaps I'll just need to scour Ebay or here for broken coils. That might not be cost effective either. I'll post looking for broken toasters in the WTB section.

Maybe Sergio knows if there's a way to "roll your own" bobbins. :?:

You will have to make your own....no one makes RIC replacement parts like this, probably because RIC would be after them for trademark violations as the parts would inevitibly turn up on fakers.

Which wire did you use in the one you rewound? 44 gauge? Formvar, polysol, or PE?

Thanks guys. I don't have injection molding equiptment, so that's not an option. ;) Not sure cutting them from vulcanized fiberboard is going to yield a nice result either. I'm sure I'll find some broken toasters at some point - no rush, since it's just for fun.
