Thanks for that John!
NICE! I'm going to order a few right now!
I TRY to keep the business local when possible, but THAT is NUTS! I was HAPPY when I found them for $35.00!
Yeah Jeff, good 'ol "prices are cheaper here in Fla".............RIGHT, SURE THEY ARE!
Re: Has Chris Squire used any string other than Rotosound?
Tony, IIRC, that is also what GC gets for them. They used to match MF, and since they are the same org still, should. I don't like Rotos because with my body chemistry they go dead in about a week, and I meticulously wash before playing and wipe down the strings after. I use non-additive soaps too. Lately I have been using Webstring's stainless rounds and they last a long time.
Re: Has Chris Squire used any string other than Rotosound?
After my earlier confident "no Roto problems here" post, I've started paying closer attention (feeling guilty perhaps?), and interestingly I've been actually watching the vibration of my strings more, and something very funky has been happening with the E and A of my currently installed set. They sound fine, it's not like there are dead spots (rather, any more than usual!), but they vibrate in weird non-linear patterns. They also sound more particularly "clanky" and metallic than usual, such as that is, so I wonder if that's the sort of thing you've been dealing with, Tony. They still work for me, in that weird way, but now I think I've become paranoid about the possibility of bad Rotos in the woodshed.
To jinx myself further, I must say that I've very seldom ever broken strings on my V63, even when my band plays 2+ hour long sets, which it still does from time to time. Unless, of course, I'm ripping all the strings off at the climax of the encore - but now I try to spare the Rick and its delaminating neck that ignominious fate, and save that bit of rare "showmanship" for the Hamer 12-string. I can tell you, that hurts - both physically and financially!

Re: Has Chris Squire used any string other than Rotosound?
Paul, I would slacken off the tension on those two strings, then at the ball end rotate them to make sure there is no twist to the trings from nut to ball anchor. See if there is and if they then vibrate more as you would expect.
Re: Has Chris Squire used any string other than Rotosound?
Thanks for that tip, John! Interesting - I've always operated on the basic assumption that the strings naturally right themselves in the "twistional" dimension (can I say that?) during the stringing-up process, but obviously that is just that - an assumption. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. And in general I will be more cognisant of making sure the strings stay untwisted while re-stringing in the future....
Re: Has Chris Squire used any string other than Rotosound?
This is an interesting thought. I'm not sure that, even if you make sure there's no twist when you originally string them, that after stretching a while some amount of twist doesn't develop. I suppose that depends more on the individual string and how it was made...

Re: Has Chris Squire used any string other than Rotosound?
I fell into this when I thought I had a dead string after putting on new, and when I went to take the offending string off found it twisted. It then behaved like the others. Ain't saying it is happening for sure with yours, Paul, but easy to check and potentially rewarding.
CJ, interesting, but more than I want to tackle, even in thought.
Besides, I'm busy building a pyramid to keep my playing bass in so the strings stay fresh... Hey, it supposedly works for shaving razors!

Re: Has Chris Squire used any string other than Rotosound?
Just be careful it doesn't end up making your bass too sharp, you wouldn't want to cut yourself...

Re: Has Chris Squire used any string other than Rotosound?
I thought I'd bring this up...
Wednesday night, my friend Dylan (who plays bass) and I were restringing his Fender Jaguar bass, and (from the advice of me) bought him a set of Roto Swing Bass 66 rounds. He was surprised at how much better and cleaner the bass sounded with the Rotos instead of with the stock Fender rounds. And as far as I know, he didn't get a bad string.
He loved them and said he's going to buy Rotosounds for his Jaguar as often as he can. Our local music store only charged him $30, too.

Re: Has Chris Squire used any string other than Rotosound?
$30 is still way too much. GC has them cheaper, like MF online. Jake, if he liked those, have him order a set or two of these:
