Would this work?

Post by weemac »

Hi all!
My 74jg is a fairly tatty thing that I got as a carcass and filled the holes and put (as best as I could) period correct parts back on.
It's a relic and is a fair victim for some tasteful custom work.
It has a large chip in the headstock so I got thinking...
"Perhaps some walnut wings would look good"
Now this is a 70s neck with the narrow wings and I'm not trying to get a 60s look but...
How about a modified 4005 or 4002 look?
The narrow walnut wings and Jetglo (with the centre stripe covered) would sort of give the bass a sort of "anti Squire" image.
Worth thinking about?

My $.02:

I think it would look better with the headstock all one color. CS had his walnut wings peeking through the creamglo and that was cool. But I have seen attempts to leave bare skunk stripe neck blanks and paint body wings/head wings; or have exposed walnut wings with other colors and I'm not much of a fan.

But that's just my opinion and you know what people say about opinions!

I've got to agree with Jeff, I think it would look not quite as you would hope. What about just replacing the broken one and touching up the JG?

Looks like the best way to proceed!

or even filling the gaps you have there and then paint over... I have found that using strong wood glue and sawdust (same kind of wood) it's a pretty good way to fix holes in wood, and then you sand it and paint the whole thing, this way you will keep your original headstock...

I would do that...

Cheers!

The chip does not look to bad from the front. But it's broken at an angle and looks to be missing about 5 grams of wood from the side and back. I either need to plane it back a bit and graft a bit onto the corner. or the correct way would be to replace the whole wing. I have the means to do this but probably wait for re-finish time for the whole instrument..

I have an '88 4003 with the same chip in the headstock. I just re-contoured the curve on the lower side of the headstock. Now you can't tell it was ever chipped.
