I have recently been listening to the following tracks and cant work out why they were not huge hits.
MORNING DEW by EPISODE 6
SMOKING A LONG CIGARETTE by ROULETTES
MY FRIEND JACK by THE SMOKE
PAINTER MAN by CREATION
My theory is that they never got any publicity or airplay at the time. I have been caching up with Creation recently and they are great, but dont even remember them at the time. Perhaps we were spoilt by so many groups all at the same time??

Only the last two you mention made the charts altough neither made top 30.
The Roulettes made some fine singles but they never escaped the tag of being Adam Faith's backing group.
Episode Six contained two members who went on to feature in Deep Purple

If you mean in the Staes Colin then corrects but here in UK it was a hit, made number 22. Clue was on first still of the EP The Mike Sarne Hit Parade.
And an EP of his hits about sums it up he had 4 in total, EPs used to have 4 tracks.
Whilst I can't I like this it was the first hit he had not to feature a girl on the record.
His first hit, a number 1, Come Outside featured Wendy Richard sa name that will mean nothing over there unless you get the awful UK soap Eastenders. Sha passed away recently.
