Oh The Sports

As I watch the Stanley Cup finals this year I am reminded of the days in which I was given the strong encouragement to go to bed with school the next day. This provided for the perfect use of the transistor radio tucked away under the pillow and the voice of Foster Hewitt. Somehow listening to the game on the radio was even more suspenseful with Foster providing the imagery.

I also remember listening to the World Series at school on my transitor radio which sometimes always alluded the teacher's collection of them in her desk.

I would be interested in your memories and Stan, did you ever broadcast sporting events.

My memories of sports on the radio are much like yours, Peter. I too often listened to World Series games through clandestine methods in high school.

I only briefly dabbled in sports broadcasting. It was a requirement when I first started in radio at a small market station where local sporting events were often covered, mainly high school football games.
Play by play is difficult. Especially sports where the action is quick, such as hockey, basketball and to a degree football.
I never really had any real gaffes during games I called but I only did football. However, for some it's very easy to get caught up in the action of the game when broadcasting. We had one rather inexperienced announcer who had a basketball background do the play by play for a regional tournament. At one point he slipped into more of a spectator than broadcaster during the game he was calling. A player put up a basketball shot which was nothing more than an 'air ball', completely missing the back board. Our play by play man gave his own take on it over the air by calling it as he saw it, " that was a half-*** shot".
Slips like this are made all the time. We just don't hear them all, or hear about them. The intensity of games often makes the play by play person react as many others might and completely forget that he or she is on the air.

Eluded, is indeed correct.

Thanks for the correction JIm. These two words are not, however, homonyms as they are neither spelled the same nor have the same pronunciation.

I would argue that this was either an improper usage of the word "alluded" or in kinder terms "a senior moment." In a nutshell, I was incorrect.
