What an inspirational figure! I can't imagine a world without Pete Seeger. Long may he run.

Happy birthday, Pete! I'm here to tell the world that this is one of the musicians who inspired me to take up the banjo. A true inspiration on many levels, musical as well as personal. I saw him once in the early '80s in Newton, Kansas playing my at alma mater, Bethel College.

Wow. I never saw Mr. Seeger in concert but his persona and music still resonate inside my cranium. Props to you, sir, and may you enjoy the happiest of birthdays! Best regards.......Goofyfoot.

Happy birthday to not only an excellent musician, but also a pioneering advocate for the environment. :)

Pete Seeger? Wasn´t that the one who got very angry about Bob Dylan because he used electric guitars  ? Quite funny to see a tribute to him in a forum dedicated to an electric guitar manufacturer. I will never quite understand the thoughts and feelings of you Americans . BUT: I think "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" is a beautiful song - and a very important song :). Happy birthday, Pete!

That story has been exaggerated beyond credibility to the point of folklore. Pete has explained the incident - he never threatened to cut the cable with an ax. It was a very small thing that was blown all out of proportion.

In short - it's another urban legend.

Pete explained the story in atwo-hour interview on KPFA a couple of years ago. It's probably archived or available as a subscription premium.

You're right, Jeff. Pete is definitely a folk legend, but not an urban one. That would be yours truly. 8) 8) 8)

The Bob Edwards Show on XM Public Radio had a very nice Pete Seeger interview last week... talking about this upcoming 90th birthday and reminising about the previous 89 years.... it was worthwhile listening.

Re the urban legend --- that Bob Dylan historical film "No Direction Home" had an awful lot of back and forth interviews with several persons concerned, about the electrified performance and the threat about cutting the cables..... they must have gone on for 8 or 10 mintues in the film, talking in circles about who said what. Where's there smoke there must be fire..... It can't be denied that the folkie-crowd at Newport that day, who were booing Dylans electric band, will live in infamy.

Q: How many folkies does it take to change a light bulb?

A: 10

1 to change it, 4 to sing about the old one, and 5 to walk out because it was electric!
