Ebay and Paypal quick easy question

Hey gang. If I sell something on ebay, and the buyer pays through paypal, does paypal charge their own fee on top of the regular ebay auction fees? I tried navigating help screens and failed. Your help with this simple question is greatly appreciated.

Yes. They charge an additional fee.

The formula was Fee = ((Selling price * 0.029) + 0.30), but I haven't checked whether that has changed.

Paypal fees are around 3%

Since Ebay owns Paypal....that's what I call double-dipping.

But really, any brick and mortar retailer has to pay nearly 3% just by accepting credit cards. Paypal provides the same service for non-merchants, hence the 3% price.

However.....I still do think that the Final Value fees on Evilbay are bloody highway robbery. I shudder to think how much money I've given Ebay the past ten years for doing practically nothing........not even a little security for sellers when an issue comes up! Where's the love?

There's plenty of security and there's plenty of service that ebay provides.

Additionally, you're paying for the service that is allowing you to sell to potentially millions of people. You're paying for bandwidth, server costs, staff costs, etc, etc.

Without those things, you wouldn't be searching ebay for cool things and you wouldn't be buying or selling outside of something like craigslist in a limited market.

IMO, that's a pretty good deal.

Paypal fees are just an additional service. You don't have to accept paypal, nor do you have to use paypal. There are other alternatives. The choice to pay for those services is up to you: as both a buyer and seller, you may limit the market you're catering to when you do not use paypal but there are other options.

I don't think either is that high for the service.

Apparently, millions of others don't either.

You don't have to accept paypal, nor do you have to use paypal.

Paypal does have to be used and accepted on all listings as a form of payment, down here at least! I'm sure ebay are trying to get paypal to become the ONLY form of payment!

I don't work for ebay or paypal.

I work for a mechanical contractor here in the Detroit area as a network admin. In other words, I deal with complaints all day long and have to put them into perspective for everyone.

In reality, I'm a digital janitor... or put a more accurate way, a digital plumber. I had to move 20 tons of digital manure tonight through a 5" straw so forgive me if I seem a little blunt.

That was not my intent.

And here you don't have to use paypal, although it is the prevalent form of payment.

Scott, not sure if you've listed anything for sale on Ebay lately but, if you list any other form of payment in your listing, they will remove it.

My complaint is not when you use credit cards, I kind of understand the vig there but, when you transfer good funds. Example:from bank account, or Paypal account. It should be a small standard fee for that.

The only way I know around is is to ask for e-check payment through Paypal. The cost there is only $5.Doesn't help on small transactions however.

The recent fee increases by both have caused me to stop selling on ebay. With only craigslist as a competitor, they know they have ya by the nads.

You certainly do here in the UK. It is in their terms and conditions that you have to accept Paypal, and you can't pass on the fees to the buyer either.
