In my case, it was the big three: Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee, and Chris Squire. Case closed!

After seeing Yes In concert in the 70's and seeing Ricks in my local music store back then, I fell in love with the look and sound of a Ric as a teenager . Chris Squire was the reason at that time. Looking back now & knowing what I know. John Entwhisle, Greg Lake, Mike Rutherford, Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler etc.... All these great musicians and more mentioned on this thread have reinforced that decison and belief especially in Progressive rock that Rics are hard to beat. :D

And Rick James *****!

I need a mod to edit the list--it's beyond my power now.

CLIFF BURTON! Absolutely!

It was seeing a pic of him with an beautifully strange looking bass (for someone whose knowledge of basses didn't go beyond fenders and explorers) that made me go into Ricks, I saw that headstock, descifrated what it said, googled it, and fell in love :)

I Later heard it, and went nuts :p

That was it, I knew I needed one, later I started finding other great players who had made the right choice: Glover and Lemmy probably the ones I listened the most. Then, everytime I saw a bass player with a Rick I gave the band a chance just because of that :p and that's how I discovered Yes, I was zapping and I suddenly saw this crazy guy playing a Ric and just loved the way it sounded (Roundabout baby).

I didn't know Geezer Butler also had a Rick...
i was sure joe macre used a rick on the studio version of"ice",but when i saw crack the sky live,he was playing it on an alembic...and getting a similar sound....
Funny, Cliff Burton also changd to Alembic and sometimes I find it difficult to distinguish which one he is using for each song in their later records (in his case his use of effects also make it more difficult).

Nice topic! I can get some "new" names to start searching for "new" music :p

Cheers!!

Chris Squire has gotten my vote. My first Rick was a 4001CS. I still listen to his bass lines in absolute amazement. I look forward to when I can actually play them!

But coming up very close behind would have to be Mike Rutherford, Geddy Lee, Roger Waters, Roger Glover, and Paul McCartney.

My mom and her 4005 O.S.! She's not on the list!

After that, then the usuals - Squire, Macca, Waters, Geddy, Rutherford, etc. Obviously Squire is my biggest tonal influence on bass....

Really hard for me to say which bassist influenced me most to buy a Rick bass. A little while before I really knew much about guitars, I was in a music store with my older brother who played guitar (he has a '66 Gibson Firebird that he bought new). I saw this particular guitar with the coolest shape hung up in the store. Soon after, I realized that it was a bass guitar and it was the same one that McCartney and Squire used. Then I really wanted one even more. I guess I should give the original credit to Macca and Squire, but when Geddy came along, he really augmented the Rush for a Rick! Of course there were several other greats as were mentioned that came along wielding a 4001 that made me want one even more.

I picked Squire in the vote.

(OK, a little kidding there...)
What, it wasn't an Ibanez you had at the time??

I remember being hooked when seeing Sir Paul and his psychedelic Ric
on the Magical mystery tour album photos. Also remember being a little
disappointed that my new 1981 4001 didn't really look like his...pickups, binding, inlays
but I learned to love it anyway

Yet another Rickenbacker bass question to which the answers are Squire, Lee, & McCartney.
