And this was the video that made me want to take up the bass, when I was 14. Furthermore, Randy Meisner is a stud! He's one of the most highly underrated bassists out there.

I wouldn't call it suprise, because I've always known he played a Rick, but the tone McCartney gets on his Beatles/Rick stuff is way different than what comes to mind when you think "Sounds like a Rick".

I wasn't so much surprised as pleased to see these YouTube examples of The Doobie Brothers in the early '70's with Tiran Porter playing a Mapleglo 4003 (Or is it a 4001?):

Would have to be a 4001 from the 70's...

I think at one time or another almost every quality bassist has used Rickenbacker...The only ones I can't picture with a Ric might be Bill Wyman and John Paul Jones...they probably used them when I wasn't looking though...

Great thread. These vids are fun to watch.

Tiran Porter is playing a 4001 in both videos. More specifically it's a nice, shiny new, mid to late '72 4001. 1/2" spaced toaster, skunk stripe, shorty headstock, (wavy?) Grover tuners, tug-bar, and full-width inlays are the tell tale signs. Me likey. Me want. Maybe when my share of the two trillion dollar bailout kicks in.
