get ready for the dumbest question ever...

Post by ricnbacker »

first off sorry...I should know this.

Is a 4003 Rickenbacker Long or medium scale?

I do not change strings often and am looking to buy a new set for my 2001 4003.
If I buy the Ric strings then it doesnt matter but I was looking at Rotosounds swingbass 66 or some Ernieball slinky's.

So just for my own info what is it?

while you are at it :D An Epiphone Thunderbird is long scale right? since it is much longer than my Ric I got that little clue going for me...LOL

Not a stupid question at all ... this threw me off when i started looking at different brands of bass strings. IIRC, I was able to find at the string maker's website (I don't remember which one, sorry) the scale lengths for short, medium, and long, and was able to fit the RIC scale length (for the current 4003, it's 33 1/4'', according to the specs at the RIC website) into the correct category (long, IIRC).
It is better, of course, to know useless things than to know nothing. - Seneca

I think they measure 33 1/4 according to the website

The T-bird actually isn't much longer, nut-to-bridge. They take the same length string (regular 34 inch). The way Thunderbirds balance makes it feel like the neck goes way further out.

I string my '74 4000 with long scale D'Addario XL's, no problem.
