A good mapleglo is and will always be my favorite. Beautiful and natural.

Yep! I like all the colors offered, but something about that maple. A little "figuring" in it is a plus, but understandably not guaranteed. My '73 MG didn't get much but I still love it.beefandbones wrote:A good mapleglo is and will always be my favorite. Beautiful and natural.
Then again, I have a FG 4001 which shows a lot of grain; has that ambered appearance I like a lot. Some of the newer FG seem to be more pink. Maybe in time they'll darken. When I see a nice old FG it's easy for even me to understand why it's a favorite.

I weasled and voted for "all of them equally". I think different finishes suit different instruments. For the most part, I think the darker finishes (JG and MID) look better on bound instruments (4003, 620, 660) and the lighter colors look better on unbound instruments (330), but there are exceptions: the 650C in Jetglo, and the 381V69 in Mapleglo.
At present I own two MID instruments (4003 and 660/12), which is the most of any one color. But so far I have only performed in public with JG Ricks (my 360 and my former 4001).

At a sample about 1.6 times higher than last I spoke up about this, the proportion of fandom to each color remains strong! Fascinating. Are we so predictable?
I wonder if RIC tracks this through sales... surely they must. According to our poll they should be making a little more than two FG instruments for every JG, MG, or MID instrument. Or looked at another way, strikingly close to a 1:1 ratio where 1 portion is FG instruments and the other portion is EVERY OTHER FINISH.
Jeez, maybe this is why I don't have my 4003 MG yet!

Rickenbacker should paint cars!

Play on, pick often, jam with any Rickenbacker, and prosper.
Re: Favorite contemporary standard finish?
My pick would be Jetglo if Ric could remember how to do black. Seems they lost the recipe sometime between 2006 and 2007....

I used to paint show cars to the same standard I apply to my Rick refinishes, David. The tab for one of those show cars was between $20K and 32K; they took an average of 3-4 months to complete. That was back in the early '90s.goofyfoot wrote:Rickenbacker should paint cars!

Yet here it is 2009 and they're blacker than they've ever been...Go figure. Of course you probably haven't seen the new ones have you?wj350 wrote:My pick would be Jetglo if Ric could remember how to do black. Seems they lost the recipe sometime between 2006 and 2007....

I was amazed at the depth and intensity of the JG on my May '08 4003.eric_b wrote:Yet here it is 2009 and they're blacker than they've ever been...Go figure. Re: Favorite contemporary standard finish?
None blacker, to say the least!
Re: Favorite contemporary standard finish?
Jetglow is definately my favorite. Theres something really mysterious about having all that flamed maple covered in black paint..
Great Ramp In My Opinion.
Re: Favorite contemporary standard finish?
mapleglo,my hands down favorite, with (certain types of ) fireglo closely behind. i know it's not among the choices, but i really like the montezuma brown and amber fg finishes i've seen better than the "standard" fg. the newer fg's have been fantastic.
