Larger Headstock

Glad to have you here, I've learned a ton of information here, and usually learn something new everytime I log on. At the very least, it's always entertaining.

It's good to be here and learn all I can about these guitars!

At work there's a subject which has become a taboo... being Rickenbackers... sign me up for the RA opening session!

I definitely like the narrow ones more, although the larger ones aren't exaclty ugly.

A rough estimate......'85 - thru some of '07. I like the smaller headstock too.

Seeing some photos of Peter Buck playing his 360 JG I was reminded of this thread. I always assumed PLB bought his one new... must have been 1980 or end 1970s - if I'm not mistaking he has a 360 JG with big headstock. Maybe I ought to write the fanclub to ask for the jackplate serial?

The Rickenbacker hollowbodies are big! So after some initial resistance I think the big headstocks make sense and really are more in proportion. That trend towards huge magazine titles, logos, etc. is sort of exhausting but I think this is a case where the old small heads are maybe too small for the rest of the guitar, at least on the 330s. Somehow the more rounded 360s look just as good with the smaller, soft-edged heads. The 50s headstocks were sort of big and sharp-edged, weren't they?

I love the giant headstock on my P-bass. And I agree with Mitch about the big headstocks feeling right, perspective-wise, with the big hollowbodied Ricks.

But my feelings vary from guitar to guitar. A big Jetglo headstock looks like there's just too much wood out there with no real purpose. And the big Mapleglo ones with the dark stripe down the middle detract from the natural, eye-pleasing contrast between the light maple finish and dark fretboard.

And I like the pointy ones more than the more rectangular ones.

Ask me again when I own a large headstock...

Small headstocks look great on Ricks. I have a 330/6 with a large and a 330/12 with a small. They both look good to me. I just ordered a Strat with a large headstock ('66 style). Looking forward to that. Some say that mass is a coefficient of sustain...

agreed. But the big ones look funny on jaguars. (I'm also a fan of "matching headstocks" which is a given with Rics).

It changes every day... one day I think the small headstock's great, the next I think it's too small...

Did the headstocks on the 12s change? my 85 360-12 looks narrow.

PS.I like the small headstock on Mitch Easter's 330 Auzureglo
